Are Plextor burners based on Lite-On drives? I know TDK's are....

Plextor makes their own drives, not based on Lite-On.

Some of the older TDK drives were based on Plextor models. For example, my TDK VeloCD 12x10x32 was based on a Plextor drive.

Plextor is a designer and a manufacturer of optical drives.
unlike TDK (and others) that only rebadge drives manufactured by others.

Ok, thanks. I know they used to use Sanyo drives. They overhaul 'em and add so much to them that that might as well make their own. I know they never just slap a new name plate sticker on the drive and say they're done, like some companies do. I was mostly wondering who makes the base drives they use now...

Check it out:

Under Mechanical system: Plextor/Sanyo.

Hmm...Apparently, Toms Hardware, Maximum PC, and alot of other sources are wrong about Plex's being based on Sanyo's previously.

Japan and many other companies use our parts in their drives.

Plextor has one hell of good tech support team, too! Got a reply a few minutes after I sent the e-mail! Wow!
I to think I bought a Lite-On instead of a Plextor. Oh well, sure learned my lesson about Lite-Ons. Got my Plextor 48x24x48, and couldn't be happier!!

yeah.
i think the confusion arises (in part, at least) because Plextor uses BURN-Proof, which is a Sanyo technology. Plextor licensed it fron Sanyo and uses it in their drives.
i think this is the only thing Sanyo about Plextor drives.

Yeah, probably...but I remember hearing that when I bought my then-cutting edge 8x20 SCSI Plextor drive, which had no buffer underrun protection at all...oh well!

Hell yeah they do! Never again will I think about buying, or recommend someone else buy, a Lite-On.

Now if only Plextor would drop the crappy software bundle and go with Nero...

Plextor burner's are not based on sanyo drive's but they run sanyo chipset as where lite-on etc run mediatek chipset's.
