can dru-500a burn dvd9 media?

my friend told me these's this 9 gig dvdr he saw online and i wanted to know if my sony can burn this kind of media.

and i want to know if there's any dvdr that is over 4.7 gigs

No. There are no consumer level recorders that can burn dual-layer (~9 GByte) DVDs, nor are there any dual-layer DVD-R/+R media. I doubt there ever will be. A dual-layer disc is complicated to make, and, as far as I know, the only way they can be made right now is by pressing them in a factory.

Now, if you mean dual-sided discs, that is another story. Yes, it can burn those (assuming they are of good quality to begin with), but you have to manually flip them over to burn and play them.

It could be if what they are selling are the dual-sided discs. But I can't tell you if you don't tell me the link.

Yes, that is legitimate in general (although I can't speak for the store itself, never having shopped there. You might to check with www.resellerratings.com and other such sites to see if this store has a good reputation.)

However, keep in mind that they are selling dual-sided media. You can use it, but you will have to manually flip it over midway through your burns and viewing. It won't be like the pre-recorded DVDs you buy that let you watch a movie the whole way through without getting out of your chair. So, operationally, one dual-sided 9.4 GByte disc isn't any different then two 4.7 GByte discs. At best it simply saves you some physical storage space.

Personally, I would probably recommend using regular 4.7 GByte DVD-recordable media. They give you one side on which to label your DVD discs, unlike these dual-sided discs.

I forgot one other thing it might be worth adding. Specialty media like this often have lower quality due to the additional constraints placed on its manufacture. For example, the manufacturer may have to make compromises in order to present a recordable surface on both sides of the disc. Perhaps the flatness and eccentricy are harder to control. Or they may not put as much research and development dollars into developing the specialty media and its production line since they know they will never sell nearly as much of it as standard media and thus won't be able to recover the R&D dollars.

It's legit. However, dvd9 means ***DOUBLE-LAYER*** 9.4GB DVD. Just 9.4GB capacity on a single disk (i.e., double-sided) does NOT make it dvd9.
