Toshiba SD-R1202, XP, can't rip MP3?

Postby michali on Thu Jan 23, 2003 11:29 pm

Hi all,

I have a new system (Asus A7N8X Athlon XP 2400+) with a Toshiba SD-R1202 combo drive. I'm running XP. I installed Adaptec's latest
ASPI driver from aspi_471a2.zip, using the install.bat.

I want to rip audio CDs to MP3, however, I can't rip. I tried AudioCatalyst
and under General settings, it shows ASPI and MSCDEX dimmed and
Analog selected. I can't select ASPI and cannot rip.

I D/Led and tried CDex and went under Options->Settings->CD-ROM
tab. It doesn't show any CD-Rom. If I click on the auto-detect option,
all the entries say Failed. It's like it can't even see the drive?

With Eacy CD Creator, I can burn CD-Rs. With Winamp I can play CDs.

Any ideas? I'm lost

seeing as no one else answered, i'll give it a shot.

i'ts possible that your troubles are due to ASPI.
Adaptec ASPI 4.71 is know to cause trouble on XP, many such reports by users.
it's better to remove it (if possible? i don't know how) and to use 4.60.
you need a program called ForceASPI to install 4.60 (unless you have an Adaptec SCSI card, of course).
here's a couple of links to get ForceASPI:
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_s ... rcaspi.cfm
http://www.cyrus.troy.btinternet.co.uk/downloads.htm

(more info about ASPI: http://aspi.radified.com/ )

you can also try (before changing ASPI) to check your ASPI configuration with Nero InfoTool.
www.cdspeed2000.com
run it and select the ASPI tab. it will (?) tell you if your ASPI layer is installed and working properly.

good luck! :)

Thanks for the advice. I ran the Nero Info Tool and it says my ASPI
installation is corrupt

From the forceASPI app, I ran the killaspi.bat and will now reboot and
try the install. The killaspi.bat said that aspi32.exe? could not be removed,
so I don't know if I'll be able to straighten this out.

If anyone knows how I can really wipe out the old version, that would be
great. I'm going to D/L 4.60 too.

Thanks again! I'll post an update.

BINGO! :D

I rebooted after running killaspi.bat and Nero Tool says that ASPI is
missing. I then read the info on forceASPI and see that it puts 4.60
on the system, which is just what I needed. I did so and now I can
see the drive with AudioCatalyst and CDex!

THANKS!!!
