Postby dodecahedron on Mon Jan 27, 2003 7:08 am

i browsed in a computer shop the other day and saw the retail Lite-On 52/24/52 drive.
looked on the box, there are many logos of prizes/awards Lite-On got.

well, the CDRLabs Editor's Choice Award was there too! :P :P :P

all is well...

I guess thats now the internet equivalent of getting your picture on a box of Wheaties!

I remember a review on 3dXtreme.org (I think) where the reviewer got very excited because Lite-On put his website's logo on their box, even had a scan of it. I think its cool Lite-On gives props to websites that review thier products. Of course its sites like CDRLabs that have really made Lite-On famous (or infamous) with CD-R users and build it yourself computer freaks who want the best gear inside thier case.

What's interesting is that CDRLabs hasn't reviewed that particular Lite-On drive yet... :o

Not in its native form, anyway. And correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe CDRLabs gives out "Editor's Choice Awards" period. Thus, it's quite an accomplishment for the LiteOn to have received one... :-?

lol.. yeah, that review is coming soon.

If you live in the US, our logo is also on the box for the Yamaha CRW-F1 (internal and external).

Apparently the Yamaha CRW3200 "received" it as well:

Dodecahedron, did the LiteOn box have the same graphic?

Ian, then I take it these are officially sanctioned uses of the CDRLabs name and "logo"?

Heh, that's our old Editor's Choice Logo. Though I've never actually seen that one on any boxes. Just the new one with the CDRLabs man. I do remember Ian asking me to send our logo to Yamaha... I forget if he asked the same for LiteOn.

true, but i might add that under the logos of the magazines/websites it says which model was reviewed and got the award. it did say under the CDRLabs logo 40x12x48, if i recall correctly.

checking the review sections i see that the 2 Lite-Ons reviewed were:
40125S http://www.cdrlabs.com/reviews/index.php?reviewid=109
48125W http://www.cdrlabs.com/reviews/index.php?reviewid=131 .

well, like you said yourself there is such an award, here it is:

Image

doesn't look like the one you put up, cfitz.
anyway, i was mistaken, the award the Lite-On got was the Best Buy Award.

Image

this was the one on the box.

guess i'll go back to that store on my way home, to check up on this, and also to buy some Kodak media :P

Yes, they asked to use them and we said yes. I have no problem with companies using our logo to promote their products if they help us out in return. Lite-On and Yamaha are two companies that are very good about this...

...unlike TEAC, who continues to use our logo on their website even after we've asked them to remove it.

I learn something new every day. You know, I really should start reading the conclusions to the reviews. I have a bad (?) habit of making my own conclusions based on the test results, and skipping the reviews' conclusions. This is at least the second time I have found out that the conclusions are more than just summaries, and contain information not found elsewhere.

Just curious, why did you ask them to remove it? Because of the performance of newer drives?

Well,

I never noticed that award on my 52x LiteON box until now!

At least LiteON is one of the better companies who honestly put the date and product that it was originally awarded to instead of just plastering it on and hoping that it applies to the current product.

It says "Feb 2002 40x 12x 48x"

BillyG,

Its one of those, I scratch your back, you scratch mine sort of things. I have a hard time with them using our logo (without asking none the less) to promote their products when they didn't help us out with a review unit.

Somebody should get a snapshot of the Lite-On box, or any other box for that matter, that shows the CDRLabs Editor's Choice/Best Buy Award. It would be cool to see. :)

It's on my LTR-52246S box I got back in early November.

I'll snap a picture with the digital camera and post it online, unless someone else beats me to it tonight. I'm @ work again tonight.

I got these images off of Newegg and you can kinda make out the CDRLabs award.

On the 52x box, it's the one on the top row at the far right. The one with the rectangle shape and a dark circle in it.
Image

On the 48x box, it's the one to the right of the two W's on the lower row.
Image

I'm sure Spazmogen will have a better pic up with his Digi Cam.

Sorry about the quality. Macro Photoragrapghy is not my speciality. I can do a good "shakey cam" though. Which is even more pronounced in Macro mode.

Here's a another shot zoomed in and cropped...

As you cam see, it's the Best Buy award from February 2002 for the 40x12x48x drive.

It appears to be a LiteOn LTR-40125, which did win Best Buy, so I guess the badges on the box aren't too far out of line.

How the heck did you find it?
