McAfee Problems

Postby Albinoni on Tue Jan 21, 2003 11:07 pm

Anybody here ever encountered problems with Mc Afee 4.0, as in terms that it slows down the PC and at some stages lock it up. This is version 4.0.4243. This is probably one of the worst antivirus and firewall software's that I've used, and am thinking of switching back to Computer Associates eTRUST.

I've been using Grisoft's free (for personal use) AVG software on my Windows 2000 box, and have been happy with it. Since it is free, you might want to give it a try before shelling out dollars on an alternative.

By the way, yes, I did once use McAfee and found it to be terribly bloated.

I'm firmly against McAfee anti-virus software. The versions I've used doen't seem to do much, other than hog resources.

I've been an avid user of Norton since 1998, and my Norton 2002 works great and seamlessly on my laptop and desktops.

McAfee VirusScan

Postby trentwilbanks on Wed Jan 22, 2003 3:10 am

I am currently using McAfee VirusScan version 5.21.1000 with scan engine 4.1.60 and have had no problems. The problems you are having may be inherent in the older version. You may just need to upgrade. Norton is good but does not scan .zip files as does McAfee. Also, my McAfee has found viruses in email from friends using Norton Antvirus which did not detect the virus. Not bad for the few extra resources used by McAfee compared to Norton. Plus, both of our versions are fairly old. McAfee is already at version 7.0+. Something to think about.

Norton scanning .zip file.

I read that a while back, somewhere. Symantec may have finally addressed that issue. If you have .zip files try scanning them exclusively and let me know result.

when i scan a zip file witn Norton it reports the number of files scanned = the number of files in the zipfile +1.
same when i scan a folder than includes zip files in it. the number of files reported as scanned includes the number of files in the zips.

so i guess it does.

Norton scanning .zip file

I stand corrected. What kinds of problems have you all had with McAfee? The reviews I have read about McAfee and Norton antivirus latest versions are picking McAfee over Norton, though only slightly. It does seem, however, according to user comments, that both brands are particular about the particular environment they are used in.
