Buslink 52x24x52 problem...

Postby AlphaAJ86 on Sat Feb 22, 2003 11:30 pm

I've been searching around, so I've heard of how the Buslink drive could be an OEM version from another manufacturer. But I'm still stuck with a problem. I just installed the drive, and it runs fine (and sounds like a jet...). It was recognized as a "52X24X52 CD-RW". When I use Nero's InfoTool or the Nero burning software, however, it only recognizes the maximum burn speed as 24x. I tried upgrading Nero to the newest version, but it still reports 24x to be the maximum write speed. It has the read speed correct, though. I sent an e-mail to Buslink, hopefully I'll get a reply; I don't like the looks of their online support area, though. Anybody here have an idea as to what I could do? Thanks!

Put in a pressed disk. the reported speed will change based on what type of disk is in the drive. You may want to read: http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?t=11378

Aopen 52x writer will report 24x for many unsupported media types. Try a Ritek, CMC or Taiyo Yuden disc.

Thanks everyone! Well, I put the blank disc that came with it in, and it sure enough reported 52x. I'm using Verbatim discs most of the time, rated for speeds 1-32x. It's with those discs that it reports 24x burn, even thoug it should be able to burn at 32x. I'll try the firmware thing later when I get time to open up my computer again and check, but my drive looks exactly like what's described in that thread.

If you're using Nero, go into "Recorder -> Choose Recorder", highlight your Buslink, press "Options" and uncheck the "JustSpeed enabled".

JustSpeed is the drive's internal media check system. The drive has a database of media types it can write to at the various speeds. But if you have a disc you know is capable of being written to at 32x, switch JustSpeed off then the drive will allow writing of the disc up to 52x.

You'll have to be careful and make sure the discs coming out of the machine are written properly (use NeroCDSpeed's "Scandisc" function for that) but in most cases good quality 32x media will write OK at 32x, and often 40x or even 48x (52x is unlikely but possible).

The irony is that the cheaper, "crappy" Verbatim Datalife (not Plus) media will more than likely write at 52x on this drive!!!

Excellent, that did the trick. Thanks!

Now, does anybody have lists of good, reliable media? I read your post and now I'm looking at this nice spindle of Verbatim Datalife plus media that I've been using..

I would say though that it is potentially dangerous to leave the drive set up with JustSpeed switched off. You run the risk of creating coasters if you go mad with it, eg burning low-grade 16x media at 52x!!!

From my experience with the Artec 52x writer, it works well with Ritek, Prodisc, CMC and TY media. I see no reason why the Aopen should be any different...

Oh yeah, I'm not gonna go burning low speed media at 52x, but I don't see why I shouldn't be able to burn it at its advertised speed. (eg, the burner supports 32x burning, but wouldn't let me burn my 32x media at that speed. It only allowed 24x)

Alright, I'll check it out, thanks.
