A Strange term "Mount Rainier" !!!

Postby nypk on Sun Feb 23, 2003 4:47 pm

Mount Rainier explanation
Mount Rainier enables native OS support of data storage on CD-RW. This makes the technology far easier to use and allows the replacement of the floppy.
This is done by having defect management in the drive, by making the drive 2k addressable, by using background formatting, and by standardizing both command set and physical layout. The new standard is promoted by Compaq, Microsoft, Philips, and Sony and is supported by over 40 industry leaders: OS vendors, PC-OEM's, ISV's, chip makers, and media makers.

this is not news.
Mt. Rainier has been discussed for the last 6 months.
many (most?) new drives support it.

Mt. Rainier is the name of the development project.
the marketing name of the technology is EasyWrite.

EasyWrite is a standards compliance logo for the new standard for dragging and dropping to CD-RW and DVD+RW , as initiated by the Mount Rainier group formed by Microsoft, Compaq, Sony and Philips. EasyWrite combines the simplicity of a floppy disk, large storage capacity of CD, and robustness needed for frequent data interchange and distribution. This ultimate floppy replacement offers considerable added value in business and home PCs. EasyWrite provides the easiest way now available to store, move and share large quantities of information.

this mt rainer has been in drives for a short while now, but there are things that i also don't understand about it.

it is supposed to provide floppy-like access on cd-rw storage medium, formatting in the background and make increase the ease of usage.

however are users supposed to see this say in their os?

im running winxp and should i drag and drop files to my cdrw it still tells me that i have files awaiting to be copied, it doesn't seem to copy them directly to the cdrw as it would a floppy. same goes with erasing..

are there special drivers for this to be loaded?

i am running winxp sp1a and an lg 52x24x52 (gce-8520b)

i am assuming that xp would have native support for this technology.

Mt. Rainier was designed with native OS support in mind. Unfortunately none of the current Windows or Mac OS's have it. You will need to install a 3rd party client like InCD to take advantage of this feature.

Because you cross-post, fill up replies with millions of ridiculous smilies, etc. I have no problems monitoring for your posts and deleting them all by hand if we get more complaints about you from the known, respected, forum regulars.
