CDRLabs Needs A Chat Feature

Postby BuddhaTB on Sun Mar 02, 2003 3:50 am

Topic says it all. It would be nice to have a chat feature or chat room where users can just hang out and talk about things non-technical. Something similar to the Beer Garden I suppose, I don't want users to abuse the chat system by asking for instant tech support or what not, because that's what the forum is for.

Any such feature in phpBB?

I think this topic was raised before, and I recall Ian saying users can go to #cdr on EFnet (that's IRC, for those who don't know). A web-based chat system wouldn't be bad, but I'm partial to IRC. It's |<r/|) 31337! :)

I can't even get into EFnet now because of my dumb firwall on my router. I've tried setting it where EFnet and MiRC are supposed to be let in through the firewall. I doubt very many people here (CDRLabs) even bother to use IRC that much anyways.

I think an actual java chat room or something like that would be best.

Ian also set up a group on Microsoft's latest P2P system:

Well now I wouldn't say that. :) Currently there are over 1 million users using IRC on 460 networks ( stats provided by http://irc.netsplit.de/networks ).

My Bad. I meant at CDRLabs. Like the people that I would want to chat with, not sure if they're using IRC now.

Possibly not, but I do! :) Some of the moderators do too. Anybody else?

Here's a phpBB forum that I regularly visit that has a phpBB chat feature built in. It was just implemented in today, so still trying it out and stuff.

I'm on several irc networks on a regular basis including the Eris Free network :) Visit http://www.efnet.org/ for a list of servers. Keep in mind #CDR on efnet is not neccesarily "CDRLabs" as there are chatters there who have nothing to do with cdrlabs at all but are still regulars.
