Slow NERO Burning Speed

Postby wenhao11 on Mon Feb 24, 2003 1:15 pm

I am using Iomega 16x10x40x Internal CD-RW amd SMART BUY 40x HIgh Speed CD-R (80min/ 700 MB).

I have been using NERO to brun CDs for almost 2 years now... periodically updating the versions. I was using 5.5.9.something and encountered a problem that when i tried to burn using 16x: the speed was slower than when i was using 12x.

This problem only recently occured... somewhere early this year. I have been using the same software and media, but one day, the problem suddenly occured. the Recorder Buffer Level / State used to be always ard 90%, but now it drop/switches between 5% - 30%, and it takes almost twice as long (or more) to burn CDs in 16x speed. It used to take abt 5 min to burn a 700 MB Data disc, but of late, it takes almost 12 min to do so. When I changed the write speed to 12x, it was only slightly slower or sometimes, faster than 12min.

I've upgraded to version 5.5.10.7b, thinking it was some software thingy, but the same problem persists.

Anyone has any clues what could be wrong?

On a side note, how much can we overburn on a 700MB disc? I've set the maximum to 83min, and so far, i sometimes get error msgs, but the disc still works.

First make sure that DMA is still enabled:

http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=6645

XP will disable DMA if it is detecting problems, or at least thinks it is detecting problems. And some system level programs like IAA (Intel Application Accelerator) will also alter DMA settings.

HOw much can we overburn?

Postby wenhao11 on Thu Feb 27, 2003 3:17 am

Sorry to bother, but do you know roughly how much we can fit into a CDR using Overburn?

so far, i'm allowing up to 83 min for a normal 700MB/80min CDR
and 89:59:59 min for a 800MB+/90+ min CDR.

I'm using SMARTBUY CDRs.

It depends on the disc and drive you are using, but I think the maximum you will ever achieve is about 83:30~83:35 for an 80-minute disc. So you are doing pretty well getting to 83 minutes. CD Speed has an overburning test you can use to characterize your particular setup, but it isn't always accurate. Feurio has one as well, and I'm sure there are others too.

When overburning, to maximize the space available for your data select DAO recording mode (if given the choice) and finalize the disc.

Note that not all CD drives will be able to read your overburned discs, so be sure to test the discs in whatever drives with which you intend to read them.

It doesn't sound like you need it, since you are already successfully overburning, but you might want to check Spazmogen's overburning guide as well:

Sorry to bother, but I have a problem with recording too. I have LG 48x16x48x and burning with Nero (latest one or any other). It takes 3.30 min on 40x. Before it took him about 2.30 min, why is that?

A time of 3:30 for a 40x burn is about right for most burners. A time of 2:30 sounds more like a 48x burn. Is that what you meant?

Anway, have you switched media lately? What media are you using? Run CD Speed's transfer rate test on a blank piece of your current media and see what it reports. Also, see the tip about viewing the instanteous burning speed in Nero:

http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=9476

My gut reaction is that your drive is simply slowing down to 40x to write to media that it is having some trouble writing to at 48x. That is perfectly normal operation.

I did burn with 40x and 48x but it is the same. Before it was 2.30 or 2.50 min. Do LG recorders automaticly adjust writing speed or what? Maybe if I put the latest firmware?

Different media give different burn times even if they are rated at the same speed.

Ian's review's proves that.

Yes, they do. All modern CD-RW drives adjust writing speed to match the media. That's why I said "My gut reaction is that your drive is simply slowing down to 40x to write to media that it is having some trouble writing to at 48x. That is perfectly normal operation. "

As Action Jackson said, you can see for yourself in Ian's review. There is a table about 2/3 down the page with different burn times for different media with the same rated speeds. Ian explains that Optimum Write Speed Control determines the best speed to write to the media.

Sometimes new firmware will improve media compatibility, so you might want to update to the latest. Otherwise, switch to a more favorable media for your drive. See the media compatibility thread. By the way, you didn't answer my question about whether you have changed media and what media you are using.

You may want to activate the option to show the true burning speed in Nero- see this post for quick info. That will tell you if "Optimum Write Speed Control" is kicking in.

I still have no reason to believe this is anything but your drive adjusting its write speed to match the media capabilities. What media are available for purchase in your area? Where do you live?

As I suspected, based on the media you had already reported using, you live outside of America. I probably don't know any media you can buy locally that might be good. But others on these forums who live in Europe will hopefully have some ideas. If you can get some Fuji media made by Taiyo Yuden or some Verbatim DataLife Plus media made by Mitsubishi chemicals, give those a try. You might check here to see if you can find anyone who sells discs made by Taiyo Yuden that you can buy in your area:

And there is the media compatibility thread here that I mentioned in an earlier post.

Slow NERO Burning Speed

Postby rene on Wed Apr 16, 2003 12:28 am

Howdy.First post here.
I had a problem with my 4X (Phillips) taking about 40 minutes to burn.(It used to take 17 minutes).I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Nero;and closing everything else when burning.Nothing seemed to help.
I finally took apart my tower, both drives and cleaned the lenses with rubbing alcohol on a q-tip.BTW,it was dusty in there(Arizona dust).
It solved the problem.
Now,I'm back to 4X burns(I know, but my unit IS four years old).
