For months now, TDK has been hyping up their new Armor Plated DVD-R discs. We were able to score a few pre-production samples and we put them to the test. Are these discs as tough as TDK claims? You'll have to check out our article to find out.

They figure were stupid enough to fall for it (and they appear to be right).

How does the "top" (label) side stand up to maltreatment? I always thought that that's the one to worry about because it's closer to the information layer.

MediumRare, on a DVDR the data layer is "sandwiched" between two layers of plastic (equal in thickness so the data layer is equidistant to the two surfaces, hence the reason DVDRs can be dual-sided), therefore the top layer is no more vulnerable than the data layer.

Ian, did you do a readability test before and after with the two DVDRs?

MikeTR, if the TY discs are only lasting a short time, why not just buy cheap discs for the car and keep a master on a TY? By the time the disc has degraded it'll have been scratched to the point of being unusable anyway You know, just any half-decent Ritek/Prodisc/CMC or similar cheapie with a decent top coating. It's what I do.....

I couldn't read either disc after the test. The "Brand X" for obvious reasons.. but with the TDK media, I think the sand paper damaged it a little too much.
