Generic CDRW drive, lost reciept, no workey

It is a Buslink 52x24x52, yes i know to look for smart burn sticker but it was $20 and I hadnt found this site yet, anyways, it is the one with only one LED color

all it does is spins up and makes lots of noise when i try to burn cds, when i try to burn a cd using WMP9, it converts the songs and then goes straight to closing cd, then i get an error that tells me to check the cd and make sure it is clean. Same thing happens with Nero. Can it be fixed without warranty or taking it back?

It's probably an AOpen. Could you post the name Nero displays for it, and possibly a photo of the drive? You should probably update Nero to the latest version at http://www.nero.com, and if that doesn't work, update the firmware. You can find it at http://www.aopen.com if it's an AOpen drive.

I dont think it is an aopen because i have an aopen DVD rom drive that has DVD or something written on it, the CDRW drive has absolutely nothing written on it, no brand name, just "52x24x52". Windows xp only recognizes it as a 52x24x52 cdrw drive. XP sees the dvd drive as an aopen. what other brands does Buslink distribute?

It doesn't have "CD-WRITER" written on the front of the tray does it? That would signify Artec.

I have seen some brandless Aopen drives. The Aopen CDRW drives have the pinhole directly above the volume control, to the left of centre (LiteOn is right of centre). Artec's pinhole is about 2/3 of the way to the right, equidistant from the LED (ususally amber in colour) and the eject button.

If it is an Aopen or Artec (and from what you describe I think it is) you may find switching DMA (or even just UDMA in the BIOS) will fix this problem -- it's a common teething complaint.

I had an OEM AOpen 32x12x48 (in CenDyne box) that had nothing written on the front. It had AOpen written in about 4-point font on its label on the top of the drive.

One of the main physical differences between an AOpen-sourced BUSLink 52x24x52 CD-RW drive and a Lite-On-sourced BUSLink 52x24x52 CD-RW drive is that the AOpen will have two buttons (one for play/eject and the other for fast-forward) and the Lite-On will have one (play/eject).

Sometimes a generic or otherwise unidentified drive can be identified if a FCC ID number is on the case label. If it is present it will be described in the FCC database and will disclose the drive manufacturer.

Read FCC ID Help, and if you can find the FCC ID number, go to the FCC ID Search Page and enter the number.

This will take you to the database entry for the drive manufacturer.
