I've never actually RMA'd a drive, but I returned one WD drive for a failure after two weeks, and its replacement (also WD) died after well less than two years.
This post doesn't give any meaningful results... what if I only bought Samsung, then obviously I'd return more Samsung than any other brand. It also doesn't differentiate between DOA and in-service failures. DOA drives are usually the fault of poor handling/packaging by the retailer and sometimes the distributor.
I've had a quite a few IDE drives
Fujitsu 12GB
Conner 700MB
Conner 1GB
Seagate 3GB Seagate 4GB
Seagate 40GB ATA IV
IBM 15GB 75GXP IBM 15GB 75GXP
IBM 80GB 120GXP
IBM 80GB 120GXP
IBM 80GB 180GXP
out of that I've had 1 conner have bad sectors (the drive is still usable, but out of warranty so it was not returned). I've had 2 DOA IBM's (the 120GXPs) and 2 DOA Western Digitals (the 1000JBs). All other drives are in great working order.
I still have all these drives, drives in bold are the ones currently being used.

Never RMA'd a drive yet I have though replaced a Maxtor which showed signes of dying also a Seagate whic after a year or two after the warranty expired got replaced after it began making a constant grinding sound.
Some of the IBM deskstar drives had problems. A friend does computers and servers for a living. He's had all of them fail. Lately WD mostly, they seem to all be cutting corners now. The newer IBM drives are Hitachi now wich he says aren't as good as the older real non Deskstar IBM built drives. I have 2 IBM's, a WD, and a Maxtor and so far they've all been fine, no problems. I have a new WD 120 SE I need to cycle in here from that smokin BB deal.
You need to read the box because every one is making the OEM style consumer drives with a 1 year warranty or the SE style drives with more cache and a 3 year warranty like they all used to have.
