Should I get the Samsung SW-252B 52/24/52 CD-RW?

My trusty Plextor 8x drive is about to bite the dust and am looking to buy a replacement. Any experience with this drive? I read CDRLab's review and while it was helpful, all the 52x CDRWs have a rating of 8/10 so it's hard to differentiate between the models.

PS- I did read through the archive and while Liteon seems to be the popular choice, I don't like loud drives...

I'd recommend the Lite-On, but you said you didn't like noisy drives.

I think that the LG drive is quieter. I have heard some reports of reliability issues with Samsung, but I'm not sure if their drives are any less good than other brands.

The LG 8530B is pretty quite, but a samsung 52/24/52 seems pretty good. Lg and Samsung are both south korean so there probaly made in the same factory.

Chevrolet (GM) and Dodge (Chrysler) are both American car manufacturers (both in Detroit too, right) so they are probably manufactured in the same plant...

hey, Skippy Peanut Butter and McDonnell Doughlas F-15 jet fighters are both manufactured in the States so they are probably made in the same plant too (the same plant as the Dodge and Chevy!)

i was just saying that they MIGHT be made in the same factory like Kia and Hyundai.
I know that they are not made in korea because my LG is made in china, samsung could be made korea for all i know.
american cars are probaly made in are a peanut butter factory it would explain why they are built so badly.(from personal experience)

they are both Korean companies, but they are distinctly different companies...their drives most definitely WON'T be made in the same plant.

To get back to the original question. I have a Samsung SM-348B in one machine and a Lite-On LTR-52246S in another.

1. The Samsung performs better with 24X CD-RW media.
2. The Samsung is much quieter with the noise buffers that are inside the
unit.
3. The Lite-On only burns discs about 7 seconds faster than the Samsung.
4. Samsung has live Tech support people that you can talk to on a daily
basis if there is a problem. You can only reach Lite-On, as far as I can
tell thus far via E Mail

Both drives are good. As I said...the Lite-On is slightly louder running than the Samsung. One minor issue...when opening multisession discs with Nero ...the Samsung reads multisession discs that were created on other machines...whereas the Lite-On does not. Seems to be a firmware issue.

I am not telling you to choose one over the other...I am saying that you win with either Samsung or Lite-On. I will not trash Samsung when I have had such great success with this combo drive. I expect that the normal CD-RW drives from Samsung are just as good. The only thing that Lite-On blows Samsung away with...it does EMF encoding with no problems...so if you intend to back up software discs...get Lite-On...otherwise...go for the better value...

Did Samsung produce by their own or buy they the writers from other companies? "Just Link"---> Ricoh, AOpen did have that. But i don´t like these writers because they have often "Medium Speed Error"

Samsung uses Ricoh chipsets, but they design and manufacturer their own drives.

Sort of like Plextor using Sanyo chipsets.
