I just got the TDK 440N: The only thing that sucks is...

Postby rvnelson on Tue May 27, 2003 10:17 pm

None of my existing software works with the drive. I have:

Nero 5.5.9...
Clone CD 4...
PrimoDVD 2.0...
other DVD/CDR apps.

None of these apps find the TDK as compatible. I'm, therefore, forced to use the bundled Roxio (bulls**t) ECDC 6. Man, I swear I hate it. But, I have to live with it until newer versions of all the other apps are released.

Other than that, I've very happy with the drive.

The 404N?

Maybe flashing it to an NEC ND1300A drive would help it to be detected better... Backup before doing any flashing!

No, it's the brand spanking new dual format TDK 440N.

For information on the drive, go here http://tdk.com/dvdburners/indidvd4xmulti.html

For specs, go here http://tdk.com/dvdburners/indidvd4xmultispecs.html

I'm not complaining too much. It's moreso a post to let others know what's up with the bundle and what to expect if they buy it.

It shows up as a "DVDRW404N" in device manager, right? What firmware is on it?

You're using an old version of Nero. Try updating to 5.5.10.28, which is the latest version, AFAIK.

TDK does not make their own drives. Its probably a rebadge of the NEC1300A, same specs.

How is it working out for you? OEM version is $230 shipped at mwave, but I think i'll problaby just buy the Sony 510 in the end

I'll have to check that...

Postby rvnelson on Wed May 28, 2003 11:32 pm

I'm at work now, I will have to check device manager to see how it's read.

Man, if that's the case, I may as well return the TDK (CompUSA) and get the Sony 510 (same price as TDK). I just wanted the black on the TDK. Sony does not offer black on the 510. I can find black on the OEM Sony U10A, but I try to stay away from OEM (Murphy's Law - I brakes on the 31st day).

Any opinions on OEM? I know the product is the same, but the warranty definately is not. Go here to see NEC's policy for OEM products: http://www.necsolutions-am.com/storage/support.cfm

I paid $340 out the door for the TDK. Since the OEM NEC 1300A is $230 shipped, do you think I paid too much? According to NEC's site, they do not warranty OEM products, you must consult with the place of purchase. And since the dealer only offers 30 day, it may not be worth the savings.

I don't think it's really worth it to go through the hastle of returning your drive.

Ah, nostalgia. This thread is almost 11 years old. I just pulled a TDK 440N out of an old PC I wasn't using and put it in a new one as a second optical drive. It looked out of place in my old grey case, but the new one is black, so it's perfect! You should have kept yours. Long live the 440N!
