I used coconut oil instead of thermal grease.

Dear all,
One day I cleaned my system and found that after I put the HSF on the processor the temp. of the CPU climbed to 66 C.Before that it was maximum of about 55 C under full load.I was shcoked and then rang a hardware store near me.I asked him for any thermal grase and the guy said that they did not have any available at that time.So I just thought for a while and dabbed the die ofthe CPU with a drop of pure coconut oil. .I was shocked to find that the oil functioned exactly as thermal grease.The max. temp. at full load was as normal 55 C.
Can anybody tell me how coconut oil works as thermal conductor?

Any organic oil(vegetable,animal,petroleum) will transfer heat and has a relatively high boiling point but they will eventually breakdown in high temperatures not to mention smell bad.
I wouldn't use coconut oil or any other oil as they are not very viscous and may drip on your board and cause a short but I do like coconut oil as a suntan lotion.

Doesn't the oil drip. Have u used Parachute Coconut Oil?

Dear all,
Hi.The oil I used is Parachute coconut oil,which is a edible
grade oil.Also I only used a small drop of the same.I dont think
it will matter much,I mean I dont think it will drip down to the
motherboard.I also dont think that it will smell bad as I have used
very little oil.
The main reason I am concerned about it is,I dont know how
long it will continue to function.
I thought you would be interested to know this "practical"
observation.

Was it cheaper than thermal grease? If alot cheaper its very practical, unless you have one hell of a hard time with the heatsink clip like my old fop32

Hehe.. good one Pranav! Try measuring the temps, and also comparing it with good thermal grease. Which CPU and motherboard do you have?

Dear bhairavp,
the motherboard is MSI MS-6368 and processor is Intel Celeron 700 Mhz overclocked to 875 Mhz.The maximum temperature that I have got until now is 55 C with oil and 66 C without oil.
Yes,the oil is very much cheap as it costs only Rs.13.50 for 50 ml and I think I only required only 1/2 ml. for the die.
