Anyone getting a Sony DRU510A?

Postby mathisan on Fri May 23, 2003 6:12 pm

I don't know what came over me today, but I decided to jump the gun and order the Sony DRU510A from sonystyle. This is the first time in my life I'm actually buying something that hasn't been reviewed or been out for a few months. Can someone please tell me if I made a huge mistake in ordering this item, does anyone know if this model will have more problems than the DRU500A. Hopefully, if it's really bad I'll just use that 30 day money back guarantee thing to return it.

I'll probably pick one up. Waiting for LG 4040 to hit the market and see what it does to the prices. I'll probably pick one up if LG doesn't bump up the write speeds.

I don't think the 500 is plagued with problems. You have to remember that folks don't come to forums to sing praise, they come to get problems solved, so your impression is skewed.

There arealways a few folks that have problems which can be attributed to either user error or statistics.

was thinkin about it just for kicks, but the fact that its only better part then the 500A is that it does 4x +RW and i mean, really what 4x +RW media is their out there right now?

well, it would be kind of odd to get the DRU510 when you already have the DRU500. save the money and get the 8x burners when they come out. this is my first dvd burner, so i didn't see the point in getting the DRU500.

because u want to save $50 cause you won't be burning 4x DVD+RW cause of their high prices whenever they arrive

I just ordered the Sony DWU10A/B2

Postby rvnelson on Sun May 25, 2003 1:22 am

Same drive as the 510A, but in white/OEM box and it's black bezelled (sweeeetttt). All for $306.34 total (incl. tax and ship) from googlegear.

It's been a long study for me deciding which dual format drive to purchase. I wanted quality first, then a great price second. I'm only concerned with the DVD+-RW features, as I already have a LiteOn 48x CDRW. After careful consideration, I finally opted to get the Sony. I should have it by Thurs (the holiday will delay the delivery).

I will POST my experiences with the drive after a few days of testing.

I'm probably going to pass on this updated Sony DVD writer.

I already have the Sony DRX-500UL.

If I have to get a second DVD writer, it'll be the NEC ND-1300A for $219 from mwave.com.

The Sony DWU10A/B2 is not the same as the 510A. The Sony DWU10A models are oem versions of the older, now discontinued 500 model. There won't be an oem version of the 510A generally available for another six weeks.

I don't have a need for DVD writing that is so urgent that I can't wait (YMMV). Therefor I've decided to wait for the real LiteOn multi-format recorder, because it'll be able to analyze the burn quality of dvd discs.

I will not make the same mistake again with dvds as I did with cd-rs back in day zero that I had to trust manufacturer information about media and burner quality.

This time I'll measure them myself, if I have sensitive data to store :)

Halc, I know exactly what you mean. Unfortunely I suffered the same problem when I baught my 1st CD RW 5 or 6 years ago (maybe less).. It was the Hp 8100+, the best they said... It's the top... It burned at 4x on cdr and 2x on cdrw. It was the best, that's for sure... but the best in giving me problems... I baught it on 31 of January.. It stayed good for 1 month in the beggining that it satarted to burn with bad quakity.. Returned it to the store and it was replaced in September that year (4 months later...) Came back with it and it would burn as I wanted.. Software problems.. Easy CD Creator was the software that time... Really bad.. Finaly In December I was able to fully understand and work with Nero... Tht was great... On the 2nd week of february that 4x laser started to give me problems... When i record at 4x, in the meddle of the burn it stoops and here goes a CD... So i had to go back to 2x... And the 8100 was the best. Las December ((5 years i think later) I baught my Plextor 48x24x48x... Ahhh that's a real machine... Burned more than 200 CDs and so far all of them have worked 100%.. no failures (and i have overburned a lot of them)...

That' why I agree with you.. I want to buy a DVD burner, but i have the gormat issue to deal. Solution: Multiformat drives... Which one? That's the big question... Sony, NEC, Pioneer, TDK, Cendyne, LG....? Wicht drive to get?...

Ian, you heard anything regarding 4X DVD-RW speeds yet?

Be nice if they could get it to 4^4.

Well I'm going to pull the trigger. Tired of waiting for the 4040B and I have a lot of stuff to archive.

Ian, you heard about the 4040B?
