NEC-1100A v.s. LG GMA-4020B

Postby MikeTR on Wed Jun 04, 2003 7:53 am

Anyone got a clue which might be the better buy for now (price here is about the same)?

I've read the review on the LG, but have yet to find a good review for the NEC. I don't really care about + or -, just about the quality and the performance of the drive. On paper the NEC looks best, but how about in real life? ANd how about NEC over LG?

You are comparing a 4x DVD+R writer with a 2x DVD-R writer that can also write to DVD-RAM. If only the 4x DVD+R media prices are reasonable enough where you live...

Agreed, it depends completely on what you want to use it for.

If you are wanting to use the drive as a removable HDD, the LG is for you (I also find -RAM more useful than either RW format for editing).

If your main task is lots of read-once discs, go for the NEC, provided the 4x +R discs are reasonable (here 2x -R are $0.70 each; 4x +R are $3.00; a big difference).

You may, as a compromise if +R discs are expensive where you are, want to get a Pioneer A05. Here these drives are <$200 (about the same as the NEC) but 4x -R media is under $1. Quite a difference. All depends on the media deals I'd say ;)

2x +/-R media are about equally priced, while 4x media are still a bit harder to come by. The difference in media requirements are not my main concern. I'm more interested in the performance of the NEC. I have never used one of their drives before.
