New Sony DRU-510A Dead? Please Help!

Postby nXt on Thu Jun 05, 2003 7:09 am

Got it "yesterday" installed it, burned 2 dvds successfully (nero).
Got home from work, tried burning several more.. and made 5 freaking coasters.. It does the Lead in for about 2 minutes then BAM, burn error and stops.

Using nero to burn DVD-Video. Using Latest version of Nero. Anyone got any ideas? Didn't install anything new or what not, Making me mad :(

Ok.. Went to test burn a dvd .img file made from DVD Decrypter.
4 minutes 41 seconds of Lead in... (using 4x media). then got an error that says:
I/O ERROR
DEVICE: 1:0:0 SONY DRU510 BLAHBLAH
SCSISTATUS:0X02
INTERPERTATION: CHECK CONDITION
ETC..ETC..

Anyone know what's going on?

this is just a guess, but i've read that the DMA settings are very important... Try checking if you have it enabled although it was burned sucessufully 2 dvds.

I think there's a utility from sony that checks your drive and test it and in the end gives you a report where you can see if your drive is defective.

There's always the possibilty to return and change for another on your local store...

Good Luck!

Yep, DMA is turned on, (set to DMA IF AVAILABLE) in winxp. checked and it's on ATA-33.

Tried again in nero, did a simulation and it went fine!, clicked burn same project but tried burning normal, it failed again.

Ok, I set NERO to burn at 2x and it works..... could it be the media??
They are kind of cheap.. "dvdpro" 4x dvd-r. got them from Meritline.com for $115 (100 pack with $8 off online coupon found on techbargains.com).

I was a bit suspicious of the media too, cuz the first 2 successful burns I set to 4x, but took 30 minutes to burn. 4x should be 15 minutes right and 2x at 30 minutes?

AAHHH CRUD. I'm writing this as it was burning 2x. and 4 minutes into it, it stoped burn error! grrr.. Guess I'll take apart my computer when I wake up Thrusday.

Maybe something with the connections.. cuz i have the dru510 hooked with liteon dvdrom 163. and my c: and another drive ata133 connected together. and two 120giggers raided. Guess i'll have to move stuff around and make the dru510 by itself on it's own channel. sigh.

I don't think it's a media problem cause if so it wouldn't do the simulation ok.
I've read somewhere in the forum that the Dru should be alone on the secondary IDE set as master... try looking around... Look for the posts on DRU 500 cause for what you're describing it seems that the 510 has the same particularities than the 500 series...

It could definitely be a media problem since it simulates ok -- if it's sensing issues with quality, it could just up and die (the burn, not the burner). I've found the Sony really sensitive to good media. It seems to have no problems spitting out a disc it doesn't like, and it may be sensing something during a "real" burn that it can't during a simulation. (since the laser is turned off in simulation mode, it's only testing the computer side of the burning process [data coming fast enough] and not even looking at the media).

[ed: at least that is my understanding of how simulation mode works on any burner]

Try buying a 5-pack of a really good brand (Verbatim Datalife Plus, Sony, TDK, etc) and seeing how that works. The only times I've had problems with my DRU500A is when I use cheap media, or the time my firewire case went out on me (that it was installed in).

Also, do NOT use Nero for burning DVD video discs. A lot of us have had a lot of problems with it. Try using the RecordNow DX that came with your burner and seeing if that works better.

Also, try putting your ASPI layer back to 4.60.

I picked one up yesterday, manuf 5/5/03. Got tired of waiting on the LG 4040B and even though the TDK 440N is cheaper, didn't like the - R/RW and +RW speed. Sony has a pretty good rep for support as well.

Do you have the latest Nero update installed? Might want to try installing it. The other thing is that you need the plugins for Nero to be able to burn certain types of discs... DVD/Mpeg2 I believe.

What you need if you've ripped a DVD is DVD2One, DVDXCopy or DVDshrink, then you can use Nero to burn the files to a disc. Normal DVDs are greater than the capacity of a single disc, so you need to take out a lot of the extras to fit it on one disc. Now that I think of it, you might have just maxed the disc out.

One other thing, Nero doesn't like copy protections, could be something as simple as that.

Used Recordnow with zero issues burned 5 Fuji +RW @ 2.4X, can be read by 4 different computers.

I don't think the drive is dead, it might be software or media related as mentioned. Best Buy had a 15 pack of Verbatim 4X +R going for $29. Cheaper than rima.com's price if I remember correctly. Might want to try that.

FYI I have my 510 (slave) and my CRW-F1 (master) one the same channel. I don't think it's a jumper issue unless you're running cable select. I never bother with that.

Rima.com has the 4X Verbatim +R for $3.20/disc, Best Buy's price is $2/disc.

I agree about trying new media.
I would try different media, especially if you didn't change anything on your PC since making the successful burns...
Maybe some of the discs are defective...
What brand were they?

However, that being said, my Sony DRU-500A has burned almost everything (except some older KHypermedia) that I have tried with it (see lower quality brands in bold e.g.):

Verbatim 2.4X +R
Verbatim 2X -R
TDK 2X -R
Philips 2.4X +R
KHypermedia 1X -R (25 packs of media ID "CMC...30" worked fine. Media ID "CMC...20" worked when purchased in 5 packs, not in spindles of 10)
Princo 2X -R
Maxell 2X -R
Fuji 2.4X +R
Fuji 2X -R
Prodisc 2X -R (as long as not using old firmware)
Burners only:

Pioneer DVR-111D

Plextor PX-716A same TLA

Well, Did some stuff.. my liteon dvd and dru510 was on cable select so i changed dru to master and liteon to slave. then went back to winxp, and started burning at 4x and it worked for a minute or two then it died again.

So.. next step was the media. I changed it to 2x write, and works perfectly. Guess it is the media.. :( wonder why the first 2 worked at 4x fine.

There goes cheap media heh. oh well.

Anyone know of a program for DVDS that's like Nero CD Speed? that tests how fast u can write on the cd/dvd disc?

FYI the DVD media market is like the CDR market 16 months ago, quality is spotty. Need to buy quality media and burn stuff at its rated speed.

I believe your DVDPro media are made by Princo and they're crap. Buy better media and I'm sure you will have no problems.

They look like Princos.. the plain white top. My brother has 1x versions of them.. I just burned a couple more of these "dvdpro"s at 1x and they worked fine. guess i'll try to return them.

Thanks.
