software to compress, preserving as much quality as possible

Postby faithfoo on Mon Jun 09, 2003 2:14 pm

HI

Pardon my ignorance
1) What is the software that will allow me to compreress DVD ( 4.7 Gb ) into CDRW ( 1 or 2 CDRW is fine) ..any freewares that is as good

2) I am aware that quality will be lost, what is the software that can hopefully retain as much quality as well as have less conversion /writing errors

I am using roxio to burn CDRW at the moment.

DivX is probably the most commonly used codec for high resolution copies from DVD to CD-R. XviD and others provide excellent results, but for a beginner DivX is probably the safest bet.

If you go to Doom9, there is a wealth of information regarding high quality transfer of DVD's to compressed files on CD-R.

I use the program called Gordian Knot for this purpose, and highly recommend it. It is available at Doom9 along with all of the freeware necessary to make high quality copies.
