If I use an AGP 8X card on AGP 4X slot , will it decrease the performance by half ?
AMD Athlon XP 3200+ , 512 PC2700 DDRAM , ATI Radeon 9600 Pro , 160 GB 7200 rpm 8 mb cache HDD

No.

In fact, MaximumPC did a test on that.

They found that on a AGP 8x mobo set to AGP 4x, the AGP 8x viddy card actually performed slightly better than if the mobo was set to AGP 8x.

No because the bandwidth of the AGP bus is never fully utilized. Will it be less, a bit, but not as much as you think. A lot depends on your system.

Same thing happened when the jump was made from AGP 2X - 4X.

www.google.com is your friend if you want a quantitative answer.
