Best CD writer as of now?

Burn baby burn!

Postby pkkk on Fri Jun 20, 2003 11:29 pm

Cant you foos read the topic?? its whats the best drive as of "NOW"!!

The topic is not asking what is the best "PRICED" drive, but rather the "BEST DRIVE AS OF NOW".

So I would have to agree that it would be the Plextor Premium.

I mean Lite Ons and Plextor's write quality are about the same, meaning really low C2 errors at high speed burns on good media, TY, but the Premium has extra features that make it better than the Lite on.

So for all you people, put it this way, if someone was to give you whatever CDRW drive you wanted, wouldnt you choose the Premium??

Although Gigarec may not be compatible with everything at its max rate of 1.4, but I've read people's experiences that at 1.2X the capacity, its pretty compatible. At 1.2X, thats more than a 90 min disc. Also for people who buy 90min cd's, the extra cost more than justifies the purchase, but we're not talking about the price in this topic now are we?

So which drive would you want if someone offered you one for free, a Liteon 52X, or the Premium??

(for those that say Lite on, admit it, you would really prefer to have the Premium down inside isnt it?? )

If I had to choose? no "Premium". LiteOn 52327S without a moment's hesitation. The LiteOn is based on a new chipset, the Plex is the same old 48x24x drive in a new skin. The LiteOn's have lower error rates too, on most current media.

If I had a choice of ANY drive available, I'd choose a LiteON 52327S, no question about it.

If I had to choose something else, or could have 2 burners of my choice, it would be the LiteON 52327S and then the Yamaha CRW F!

However, if I could have *3* drives, I would choose the LiteON 52327S, the Yamaha CRW F1, and THEN the Plextor Premium drive.

without meaning to offend anyone (and without referring to any particular person), let me quote myself from earlier in this thread:
dodecahedron wrote:it's funny, what with some people belittling Plextor for not being good drives but only a good reputation, and now (some of the same people?) are recommending a Lite-On drive that isn't out yet...how do you know it's going to be good? maybe because of the Lite-On reputation??? hmm... :o

dodecahedron: You forget, we HAVE seen results...or at least some of us have. You forget that Karr Wang used a 52327S drive for doing burning and testing with K-Probe on at a least a couple occasions. Unfortunatly, due to web hosting problems, all his pictures are now gone, but the proof remains: http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic. ... &start=150

Check out the second post on the page, and later Harrier comfirms it.

so ok, it ISN'T a review on the drive, but we DID have access to prerelease results

I think this is crazy. The DRIVE IS NOT OUT YET, YOU DO NOT KNOW IF IT WILL BE GOOD. You can take a guess, and say that it will be good. But, you do not know for sure. It is all Lite-On's reputation, that you are looking to, and saying, "well, if lite-on makes it, it has to be good."

This is not always true, Lite-On is not always the best.

If someone offered you the LTR-52246S, WHICH IS AVAIBLE NOW FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, or the Premium, which one would you take?

It's also available in Asia, I've heard from several people that have one. Ian has one too. You're going to have to find something else to whine about.

OK. visited that link, and also looked one page forward and one page back.
like you said, the pictures are gone. i believe ( ) when you say they were of 52327S drive, but they are gone now.
from the remaining text, no info on the burns can be ascertained.

i don't know what you're talking about Harrier "confirming" it. "confirming" what? his post on that page confirms nothing. and i don't know what you think he can confirm, as he has a 52246S drive, and seeing as he's from Israel like me he'll have access to a 52327S drive much later than any of you guys.

besides, all the above notwithstanding, what conclusion do you think can made from just a couple of screenshots of two burns? can you really say that it will be a good drive just based on a couple of burns, from one person, on one drive, no extensive testing, no testing of various media etc. etc. etc. ???? really!

so that's just the point i was making - it's the Lite-On reputation.

and to score one point for the other side:
i, too, think the 52327S drive will be a very good drive, with excellent writing quality. and yes, i am fully aware that i make this statement based on my faith in the Lite-On reputation...(which is just the point i was making  ).

It's black, so it must be at least as good! Everybody knows that black drives have the lowest jitter! And, if you wear shades while you're burning, it's even better 8)

All you LiteOn boyz are so ignorant.

(no offence, but only based on these:)

Lets compare the two, so if someone gave you either one:

1. They both have excellent burn quality

2. LiteOn 5224 is faster than the Prem by about 5-10 seconds (big F*uc*n woop)

3. Prem "does" have faster rewrite speed due to PCAV

Now these are just the basic requirements for any burner

4. Prem has Gigarec (like I said in my earlier post at 1.2X , its readability is better on different drives and sure saves you $ on 90min blanks)

5. Prem has Securec ( to back up and encrypt all your porn so your wives or husbands can see)

There are a few more points but they're not as important.

But now all you LiteOn boyz are sayin that you would pass up those extra features?? Just because "I'm a Liteon fan because the drives are cheap for their performance".

But I'm sorry, the LiteOn is just a basic burner, whereas the Prem is a Deluxe kind of burner.

Now that is just plain dumb lol.

For the price of one Plexy Prem you can get at least two LiteOn's!

So you don't care about CD-R speeds but you DO care about CD-RW speeds? gotta be consistant buddy. Also the 52327S (which is the drive I said I would choose) is faster at re-writting, or at least it will be if 32x CD-RWs ever come out

pkkk wrote:4. Prem has Gigarec (like I said in my earlier post at 1.2X , its readability is better on different drives and sure saves you $ on 90min blanks)

Gigarecord does nothing for me, since I use 99min media for 99min SVCDs which will be compatible on standalone DVD players. Gigarecord discs are not very compatible! If all you ever do is use the discs on your computer, then Gigarecord is fine... *I* however do not do this.

pkkk wrote:5. Prem has Securec ( to back up and encrypt all your porn so your wives or husbands can see)

If this is the best reason you can come up with to market SecuRecord to me/us then that is pretty sad! however, yes, securecord is a cool function, and I'm sure small and large businesses alike will greatly benefit from it. Plextor even did something nice and put out software so people without Plextor Premium drives could be able to read the discs, but other then the initial coolness, I don't think the average person would use it, or really want to use it (unless they are trying to hide thngs from their loved ones, as you said). I mean, what would happen if you forgot the password! There is no password recovery system, and writing it down sort of defeats the purpose.

If I had the choice of any drive, I'd probably go for the 52327S due to Lite-On's track record with previous drives and Lite-On's lower prices.

I must admit that the Plex has some nice features that the Lite-On just doesn't have, but I don't think that I want them enough to pay that much for a drive.

I am not a Lite-On fanboy, but my opinion is that the Lite-On would be the best use of money for me. If you will use features like SecureRec and GigaRec, the Plex may be a better choice.

pkkk: I agree, the Plex is "a deluxe burner" while the Lite-On is more "basic". However, I don't need the "deluxe" features enough to pay $100 or more for a drive, when I can get Lite-On drives for so much less.

well he does'nt say he does'nt care about speeds, only about significant speed differences. so far Lite-Ons rewrote rather slowly, right?
if the new 52327S rewrites faster (PCAV) and the difference is marginal, then it's marginal :)

You guys are so flippin DUMB!!!

Like I said earlier, this THREAD is what is the best burner as of "NOW", not what is the best "PRICED" drive.

Best Drive for money would be Liteon no doubt.

But best drive as of "NOW" not "LATER" is the PLEX PREMIUM period.

Also, about my point about the writing times, for normal CDR, the Liteon is faster by about 5-10 seconds, and that is no big deal.

But for rewriting, read the reviews, at 24X, Liteon averages 18.5X at 4:38s, while the Prem at 24X, averages 23.92X at 3:22s.
Now this is a big deal you David. Again, due to PCAV. Now imagine how the rewrite time would fair at 32X PCAV versus 32 CAV?? Is my point clear now???
