I just got the Liteon 166s, need some help.

How fast is too fast?

How come when I insert a DVD Movie, and try to test the transfer speed with CdSpeed, I get this error message: READ OF SCRAMBLED SECTOR WITHOUT AUTHENTICATION (056F03) .

Its just that when i read the reviews, sites clearly show the transfer rate performance with movies and dual layer movies.

I have installed the adaptec aspi 4.6 drivers to be able to rip DVD movies. I have successfully ripped DVD movies also.

Also, is it possible to upgrade the firmware for this drive?

Last question, for anyone else who owns the 166s, when a disc spins up, does yours have a ball bearings spinning kind of sound??

Thanks.

CDSpeed does not have a license to the proper (EXPENSIVE) technology necessary to unlock CSS protected discs. Play the movie in a DVD Player like PowerDVD or WinDVD before trying to test the read speed with it. PowerDVD and WinDVD have bought licenses to the Key decoding stuff so they can unlock the disc.

Your drive has balls, and that is what you're hearing. See here.

Ah-hah! I've always wondered about that spin-up sound. At first I thought there was something wrong with the drive...

Thanks, dch014!

WOW!! Thanks for answering all my questions! I feel at ease now knowing what that ball bearing noise was, because I dont think my friend's LTR 163 had that noise.

Also, thanks for the link to firmware.

About the CdSpeed unlocking, its just that I noticed website reviews test the drive's transfer rate with movies, but I am not able to reproduce those tests.

Remember that to achieve the maximum transfer rate for DVD movies you need to test on a full, single-layer disc. The drive will read dual-layer discs at a slower rate.

cfitz: yeah, I know about the single layer to reach full 16X, but the problem is that when I put a DVD movie, CdSpeed doesnt even start the transfer rate test, I just get this error: READ OF SCRAMBLED SECTOR WITHOUT AUTHENTICATION (056F03) .

Did you try dhc014's suggestions? He gave you the straight dope on what you need to do to bypass that error and run a transfer test on a DVD movie. I'm getting a little confused now as to whether or not all your questions have been answered to your satisfaction.
