Need help on deciding on a DVD Burner... I got a few options

Postby hav0k99 on Tue Jul 08, 2003 7:05 pm

Right now I can get an NEC DVD+R/+RW (420N) for $150 shipped or a Sony 510a for $225 shipped. I like the TDK because it's black and alot cheaper. I'm going to be using the drive w/ DVD shrink to copy movies to play in standalone DVD players and also to *backup* Xbox and PS2 games. If I realy don't need DVD-R and won't posswibly in the future I'd like to go with the TDK. Also I'd like to get a drive that supports the most formats like Mt Rainer.

Can anyone help?

I'd go with the Sony personally, but that's because I have one.

I did a fair bit of research and the only benefit from a performance standpoint is that the TDK (NEC1100) has a 40X read speed versus 32X... which in reality is pretty inconsequential.

The other knock against NEC based drives is media compatibility. Sony is better.

Regarding -R, the benefit of having a dual format burner is for those instances where you find a player that doesn't like +R. I've run into it. Also, -R media is a bit less expensive than +R.

There aren't any burners out there that support MRW yet

i could be wrong, but i think the new Ricoh drive (4x +R, 4x +RW) has Mt. Rainier.
