It's a Lite-On drive unless Memorex has changed drives.

Believe it or not, I actually bought one of these drives.

It is a Lite-On. However, the ID string has been customized by Memorex. It's easy to change it back to a Lite-On though.

Ian,

Could you please explain what you mean by this ID string? Why is this important? Can you give me the details on how you would change this string? Do you have to update the firmware to the latest for Lite-On or is there an issue with that? What program would I need to use for the update?

Thanks

Instead of being identified as a Lite-On LTR-52246S, its identified as a Memores something or other.

I won't give you details on how to do it since it will void your warranty and I don't want to get into hot water with Memorex. However, there is a lot of info out there already on how to flash your firmware using mtkflash using one of the firmware updates from www.firmware-flash.com.

Ian,

Thanks for the info, as usual you alway have been helpful!

What is the advantage of flashing to this 6S0F latest upgrade?

There is no info that I can find that explains what areas on improved buy taking this RISK to flash the drive.

Also does that Memorex string cause any problems since it does not say Lite-On? I mean in rcognizing or using the drive?

Thanks

The advantage of updating to the latest firmware from Lite-On is that it may make the drive write at a higher quality. Also, the drive may be recognized by more software if it has the Lite-On firmware, but that is not guaranteed.

Also, your drive may not work with the included recording software if you flash it with the Lite-On firmware because the software may be set up to recognize only drives with Memorex firmware.
