VIVO - Your thoughts please

Postby integspec on Sat Jul 19, 2003 10:28 pm

Hello Everyone,
I'm planning to buy a video card with Vivo capability. These are the basic specs:

If Nvidia:
Geforce FX 5600
256MB
AGP 4x / 8x
DVI and TV Out
Vivo - Must

If ATI:
Suggestions please

Btw, I have almost decided on a Nvidia Geforce FX5600 hence the unavalibility of ATI's with 256 MB and those which are available not being affordable. I'm more concerned about VIVO (video input from VCR, TV, and live video capture from external TV). I don't wish the card to have internal TV viewing functions.

1. Please tell me what could be done with VIVO (especially from your experiences)?

2. What vivo and other capabilities one should look for when buying a card?

3. Also the differences between available options (if any / eg: s-vhs, s-video)?

Also please point to some reviews / articles which explain vivo better.

cheers / many thanks everyone.

ATI has always had the best VIVO card on the market. All their VIVO cards are labelled All In Wonder (AIW).

If VIVO is your main concern, then you should not use 256MB of RAM as one of your key factors. You need to focus on the core functionality.
It's been proven that 256MB is a waste with the current crop of games with high end cards that have the potential to utilize that much memory (5900, 9800), simply put, that amount of RAM is totally wasted on the 5600 core.

I suggest you go to www.google.com and find the information. Taking the initiative is always a good thing.

Price range should also be your other determining factor. I'll give you two links, then it's up to you.

Also if you have any plans on playing Half-Life 2, you should seriously look @ ATI since nVIDIA will not be able to use AA due to hardware limitations.

I have a ATI All-In-Wonder 7500(videocard w/tv out, capturecard,tv tuner) and it captures video in DVD resolution(720x480 NTSC),they cost around $130USD.I use the card to put my families old VHS tapes on DVD and "tape" tv shows from cable to burn on a DVD-R/W,poormans TIVO.If you're a gamer you might want to buy a 9000 series.

BTW..VIVO means Video In Video Out.Capture quality ranked best to worst:S-video,composite,coaxial

Aie! No! Not a Radeon 9000! Get an 8500 instead. Read reviews comparing the 8500 and 9000; any review will tell you the 9000 is a wannabe of the 8500. The ironic part is, the 9000 is newer! Puzzling indeed!

Tazdevl, burninfool and wizard thanks a lot for your replies. Well before my post I did many serches on google and couldn't find much detailed info on vivo. I had a basic idea about vivo (surely what the abbreviation stood for ;-)) but before making the purchase wanted to hear from your experiences. Luckily tazdevl's links and burninfool's (why not burninwise?) answered my question. And most of the reviews found on HW/OC sites concentrate on benchmarking and performance but not much on the vivo side.

Tazdevl, can you please explain why 256MB is a waste on the cards?

What about Radeon 9600? (the last affordable range for me @ this time)

Btw, I play games (NWN and other RPG, adventure) but I'm not a power gamer. Still the card should be able to have decent quality on moderately higher resolutions.

Thanks again guys.

I don't think theres a 9600 based VIVO out there yet. You should be able to get a 9700 based AIW fairly cheap since they're about a year old.

Look at every review of a 256MB Radeon 9800, current games don't require that much onboard memory. There is a slight increase in performance at ultra high resolutions (2%) with all the eye candy turned out. Does the performance increase outweight the cost? No.

Also as I said, the 5600 is a lame duck core, the engine can't get through all that memory. It's unnecessary and adds to the cost of the card.

That review on Anandtech goes into great detail about the VIVO functionality of the card.

There is no 9600 All-In-Wonder, nor a 9500, for that matter. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I haven't seen either model anywhere, not even on ATI's site.

For quality performance with games and VIVO, I recommend the 8500 All-In-Wonder as that is in your budget. Alternatively, if there is no rush to buy the card, why not wait for the 9700 All-In-Wonder to come down in price?

If you don't need speed, the 8500-DV is a better VIVO card than the AIW(because of the dongle) . VIVO quality on all AIW cards are exactly the same except for the new 9700 AIW, which has slightly improved vivo image quality.

I don't beleive the 8500DV has a tuner so you'll need a seperate tuner (like a cable box, VCR, etc) if you want to watch TV.

You can get VIVO support on non AIW cards, but you may only get an S-video out and a single RCA input. I have the 8500DV and though it doesn't have blazing speed, I love its unique Digital tuner; channels change almost instantly. The 8500DV's dongle has any kind of input and output that you could want including even a powered firewire port.

You can see the input and output plugs for different ATI cards at the linksat the left.

I have to say, the 9800 AIW is looking very tempting. Though I think I'll wait for a R360 based product.

Guys, Please tell me your opinion regarding these cards:

ATI Radeon 9500 Pro VIVO: 128MB, 400 MHz, DDR SDRAM, AGP 4x / 8x, SVideo, Video IN/OUT, DVI-I. (225 USD)

ATI Radeon 9600 Pro: 128MB, 400 MHz, DDR SDRAM, AGP 4x / 8x, TV Out, DVI-I. (192 USD)

Except for the VIVO both cards seems to have the same specs regardless of model. What's the catch? If there is no difference, I'll go for the 9500. Btw, when is R360 cards are to be released? Really appreciate your support guys.

This link answered my question exactly. Thanks everyone, without your good advice I would've ended up burning my money on a Nvidia FX.

http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.html?i=1812&p=1

For some reason always liked Nvidia. Really there is no complains about my existing GF2 Mx400 with 64MB. But time to move on and with your help I can make wise decision.

Btw, if you softmod 9500 Non Pro to a 9700, do you have to do any meddling with hardware? (changing the cooler, fixing heatsinks to RAM on board the card, etc...).

Thanks again for all your help guys.
