"Verify written Data" necessary or worth the time?

Is checking the "verify written data" box (in Nero) worth double the burn time. I have a Yamaha F1 and am usually burning avi's.
Everytime I've checked verify written data it has never found anything. But with as many cd's as I burn in one setting I don't like to go back and check each one. Thanks.

Backup to CDs no, DVDs yes.

It's worth doing if you're using it as a permanent backup.

Your time is better spent scanning the disc for read-errors. (about the same amount of time) The odds of seeing a data corruption are very low, the odds of seeing a poorly burned disc are much higher.

Yes, but I have found NERO to be inaccurate and overly fussy. It will flag files that read perfectly.

So if it flags a couple of files.. check them for yourself.

In some cases running tests it is the same file even on different file contents on the DVD. That tells me there is a bug in the process.

Don't use Nero Verify, use Nero CD Speed's Scandisc found in the Nero Toolkit. It is much more accurate and more likely to report data correctly.

My rules:

If you are:

1. Backing up really important data for archival

2. Making an only copy (important data), perhaps before deleting it from hd

3. Sending away material for pressing or client that needs to work when it arrives

4. Using a new media of unknown quality

5. Using a new drive of unknown quality

6. Using a very old / unknown / unstable system

... then verify, if any or more than one of these conditions are met.

YMMV, of course.

*this rule will eventually be amended to include other forms of recordable media when I purchase other drives.

Quite seriously though, I've lost *SO* much data in the past that I always test my CD-Rs, the *ONLY* time I make an expection is when time is of the utmost essence, and in those cases I only use tried and true Taiyo Yuden media.

i agree, i always verify my burns.
but not with Nero!
it's data verification is untrustworthy, and many bad burns pass it.
i always test important data with CDSpeed (ScanDisc and Quality Check) and with CDCheck.
too bad i don't have a Lite On, i would check with KProbe too!

I rarely do a file verification unless I am recording very important data. However, I often scan the discs with KProbe in my LTR-48125W.

I always do them when recording a DVD. One disc I was recording had a small opaque particle sort of stuck on the recording side. Afterwards, Nero reported that some files in a certain folder could not be read. Sure enough, I could not read them reliably with either of my drives. I simply re-recorded this 300MB folder on the next disc.
