Is a DVD writer enough? (Newbie)

Postby hariskar on Thu Jul 31, 2003 12:38 pm

If I have only a DVD writer for both using it as a DVD writer and a CD writer is it ok, or has it some disadvantages and I should I get a cd writer too? Thank you!

DVD Writers usually don't write CD's as fast as dedicated CD Writers do. If you need very fast speed, then you may want an additional CD Writer.

I don't mind if it's only about the speed, what about the quality?

I think some (if not all) of the reviews of DVD recorders here at CDRLabs cover their writing quality for CDs. You might want to check them out.

IMO a DVD writer should write CD-R's fine. So if you have space constraints on your PC then stick with a DVD Player.

However, CD writers are extremely cheap, so if you have space internally I'd recommend that you pick one up to install (Of course don't buy any Buslink products!). This will also save wear and tear on your DVD Writer.

But DVD Writer prices are coming down, so that won't be a huge issue in the future...

rdgrimes, what do you mean? I have allready 2 hard discs, so I can only install 1 cd-dvd player and 1 cd-dvd writer (atapi) isn't it so?

You could put your writers into external firewire enclosures and daisy-chain to your hearts desire(add as many as you like).

PCI-IDE cards are the answer :) ! I have 3 Hard drives internally, a DVD-ROM (Toshiba SD-M1612), a CD burner (Lite-on 52246S), and a DVD burner (Sony DRU-500AX) in my current box. I feel this allows me to use the best tool for any task I care to undertake, and saves wear and tear on my $350 Sony. I did have to upgrade my power supply unit to maintain this set-up but I was looking to do that anyways as the cheapy that came with my case was not exactly a world-beater. If you have room in your case this is probably a cheaper alternative than external cases (USB 2.0 or Firewire) and in my experience gives higher quality data transfers.
