Who Makes Verbatim Model 52X24X52A Writer

Postby TCAS on Mon Aug 11, 2003 11:02 pm

I was looking for replacement of my 56X CD-ROM today at Best Buy, where I saw Verbatim CD-RW writer Model 52X24X52A with 10 digit serial number starting with 3 for $40. Has any one knows who makes this writer. I have looked in to Asus , Cendyne and Lite-on with no matching spect. The drive says uses Buffer Underrun Protection but doesn't say what knid or from whom. Appreciate any information on this drive.

TCAS,

My Verbatim, same model, was a LiteOn with 12 digit s/n starting with "2".

Check the Hot Deals forum for the Best Buy 52x32x52x LiteOn for $10.

Thanks both for the useful information. I should make one correction the model number on the writer says:52X24X52 CD-RW. I hope some one know the manufacturer.

Cowboyslim; thanks for the tip on Line-On, since my main writer is already Lite-On, I thought if I go for the second writer to replace my existing CD-ROM Drive I better go for the different CD-RW writer manufacturer.

For very one information, I just found out this drive is being manufactured by Aopen. So how reliable are Apen CD-RWs Drive I have no clue at this time.

I have the AOpen drive which is called the 52X24X52 CD-RW. As far as I can tell, it is the OEM version of the AOpen CRW5224. With the original firmware (1.04), the write quality was good for CD-R discs, but terrible with CD-RW discs (I tried Imation 4x CD-RW and Philips 12x CD-RW).

I upgraded the firmware to version 1.05 from AOpen's web site (it required using a special DOS updating program that you can't get from AOpen's web site, though), and the writing quality is much better on the Imation CD-RW discs. I haven't tested it with CD-Rs or with the Philips 12x CD-RWs yet, though.

All things considered, this drive is OK, but in my opinion, the Lite-On 52x32x52x from Best Buy would be a better choice because it is a better drive (check out the review), and it is much less expensive. It certainly can't hurt to have two Lite-On drives in your system.

CDRecorder;

Thanks for the information, I read that review, although was very comprehensive and technical oriented but the author left the judgement to the reader to decide which writer to choose from. I gave the drive (Aopen(52X24X52 CD-RW) to my inlaw as a gift, meanwhile I will look for other alternative.

Today I went back to best buy to browse on CD-ROMs or CD-RW writers, In bunch of 20 package from Verbatim, luckly, I found one package only with Lite-On Writer in side (Lite-ON 52X24X52). I bought this one, installed it in 5 minutes and start burning happily with no trouble at all. Now i own two Lite-ON (52X24X52), one in Secondry/Master and another one in Secondry/Slave configuration.
