Just got my Optorite DD0203 from accupc.com

DVD-R/W, DVD+R/RW, DVD-RAM

Postby fogfire on Mon Aug 18, 2003 8:58 pm

Media Questions....

First... Spend the bucks get some TDK or Phillips etc. Make sure your drive is working. DVD drives can be fussier than modern CDRW, about cable location some utilities that monitor the drive / use the drive.

Once you have a good burn on Good DVD+/-RW try it on -/+ R fill the disk.

Then try out cheaper media. But you need a base line test of your install first.

The short answer to your question is to avoid only Verbatim DVD-R discs made by CMC Magnetics. Some people reported that they got their Verbatim DVD-R discs made by Ritek which is very good, so YMMV.

If you want to learn more about the DVD media, read the following link:

and download DVDInfo to identify the media code:

I purchased some Verbatim DVD-R from Office Depot. Had a good deal, buy one get one free. Anyway I checked to see what they are and they come up CMCMAG.

Didn't matter, I tested it out and it burned at 2X with no problems at all. I am using firmware 2.16.

So I say go with Verbatim, they work with the latest firmware!\

you r making the statement as if there is only ONE TYPE of dvd media i.e. Verbatim out there in the market. if you judge a burner by this what-so-big-deal Verbatim media, i think it is a prejudice. or issit that at your place there you can get only Verbatim media, pathetically?

Raygay, learn to use grammar check and reread my post before making a "statement" like that. Did I say im judging the burner just by one type of media? NO. I said I ORDERED some VERBATIM DVD-R and I needed to find out if they were compatible or I would just cancel my order. After rereading your post again "this what-so-big-deal Verbatim media" wtf does that mean? "or issit that at your place there you can get only Verbatim media, pathetically?" So your saying I'm pathetic or that Office depot is because they only have that on sale. Seriously, learn to read and type first before going off and having a dic* attack.

P1Tom, thanks for your response what formats did you try the verbatim media on? Is it possible you list some of the places you got it to successfully work. I read earlier in some posts people were having a problem with this media and I too jumped on the buy 1 get 1 free deal.

Well if by formats you mean - What did I burn to the Verbatim DVD-R.

The only thing I have tried to burn on it was a backup of a DVD and it worked with out any problem. I am using Nero 6.0

I didn't try to burn any data to it, I only use DVD-R for movies.

I did only test one but I see no reason why it wouldn't do it again.

I think you made a good buy from Office Depot. I mean 1.10 a DVD it is not a bad price. I will let you know if I have any issues. Anyway Good luck and I wouldn't cancel the order.

I tried Khypermedia from Office Max last week and that Media was too hit and miss for me. Most of them worked but I had a couple say that my Calibration Area was Full when I tried to burn. (Does anyone know what that means?) If you are looking for cheap media they have their 25 pack on sale this week for 24.99. At least here in Texas they do. I guess it could be different per state for some ads.

I never tried burning Verbatim DVD recordables, but would like to share my experience with another media - Memorex 4X DVD+R with Optorite DD0203. Purchased them at CompUSA. Buy the way, go to CompUSA's website, click "Unadvertised Specials", print the ad and take it to the store - 40% off on any Memorex DVD media (with printed ad only) through Friday, Aug. 29!

I was able to successfully burn movie on 2 out of 3 Memorex 4x DVD+R's (almost washed out the 40% off deal). The burn process of two successful disks went flawlessly, at 4x speed, internal buffer never went below 98%, the burning time - little over 12 minutes!

So far I never had any luck with any DVD recordable media that would play on all my DVD players: DVD-ROM drives in my three computers, Samsung 631P DVD changer and xBox. For example: movie on Memorex DVD-R, played on xBox and Samsung DVD player, was not recognized by DVD-ROM drive. CompUSA 1x DVD-R played on Samsung, but not on DVD-ROM, poorly played on xBox. CompUSA 1X DVD+R, played on xBox, but neither on DVD-ROM drives nor Samsung player. Yesterday's burned Memorex 4X DVD+R disks perfectly play on Samsung DVD player (Samsung's manual states that the player is compatible with DVD-R/W media only) and any computer DVD-ROM drive, but xBox would not recognize them at all.

P.S. DVD InfoTool recognized the manufacturer of Memorex 4X DVD+R disks as Mitsubishi Chemical

Got the eject fix from optowrite last week, finally installed it, just a very small screw that goes in front of the eject buton, works like a charm...barely touch it and it pop's open.
I even installed it as my machine was running!
You need to open the tray.lift up on the front tray faceplate and remove that then push down on 2 top and 3 underneath tabs to remove faceplate, real simple and theres a small hole in the eject button were screw goes in, need a small eyeglass style philips screw driver to install screw.

Thanks tig and budman,
Damn it seems very confusing that each media only works on certain players. I have the xbox as well and thought it only took dVD-r and the fact that your dvd+r workedon your samsung which stated they only accepted dvd-r is a damn mystery. Now im really confused.Tig, whatkind of players did you try your verbatim dvd-r on? If possible please list including any consoles you have. Thanks.

jabroney12: As I mentioned at the beginning of my previous message, I never tried Verbatim brand media. I tried Memorex (Mitsubishi Chemical) and CompUSA (Optodisk). I saw many positive comments on Ritek and Fuji brands, but haven't tried them yet.

For testing I have the following players: xBox, Samsung DVD C631P 5-disk DVD changer, EPO 12X DVD-ROM drives in my computers, and, of course, the Optorite DD0203. Again, I did not have luck with any type or brand of media that would play on all my players. I guess I need to do some more research until I find a perfect match, but the research becomes pretty expensive when you have to buy spindles of different media for testing (or expensive single ones).

You can check the compatibility of types of DVD media (+R/RW, -R/RW) with DVD players on http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdplayers.php, but I don't think that site provides accurate info. For example the site states that my Samsung player is capable of playing both -R and +R, but user's manual mentions -R/RW only (although Memorex +R works, and CompUSA +R doesn't). I wish that site would also provide brand of media that would work with listed players.

Alright

Postby P1Tom on Thu Aug 28, 2003 7:52 pm

I tried the Verbatim DVD-R on three different players and it worked on all three. I tried it on XBox, Playstation 2, and Stand Alone DVD Player (GE 1105P).

So far all the DVD-R Media I have used works on all three of those players.

I have tried FujiFilm DVD-R 4X (My personal favorite)
KHypermedia DVD-R 2X
Verbatim DVD-R 2X
That's DVD+R 4X (The one that came with the Optorite Drive)

They all of course played on the Optorite.

Hope this helps.

Only visible change on mine is it is now RPC 1. (YES!!!)

But I recieved this drive TODAY, and it says I only have 2 changes left via windows. I certainly haven't changed it 2ce already (or even 1ce for that matter). Is this some Windows thing for RPC-1, or are the bios updates actaully taking away the change counter with each update?

Firmware 2.17

Postby P1Tom on Sat Aug 30, 2003 1:05 pm

Anyone having issues with Firmware 2.17? I don't know yet but I think it is making my system reset when it has an issue. I tried to burn on some cheap Media and got a Calibration Error, which is no big deal had that happen before, but then my system reset.

Then I was trying out how well Optorite can read my other CD-R's and one of them it couldn't read, said it was blank even though I knew it had files on it. Then it seemed to get stuck and my system reset again.

This didn't start happening until I started using 2.17. I am using XP Pro. Anyone else experience anything like this?

I swithced back to 2.16 and I will let you know if it happen again or not.

The only time I had this happen was when I was uisng B's Recorder. Even after uninstall it left a driver you can see in the Nero driver listing tool. Once That was gone.. I ahve had no stability problems.

I gave both a fair shot. Now trying out Nero 6 I am sold on Nero.

Using 2.17 i noticed the lights have changed, the busy light is always on with a blank installed, didnt see that with previous firmware.
Also when burning the busy light will just flash on and off, unlike before it would flicker like my HD lite on my case.
Kypermedia/TDK DVD-R disc's still burn at 2x, i had some princo 4x dvd-r's but used them up,wanted to see if the newer firmwares actually got 4x burning.
I have yet to see any -R burn above 2x, but i'm not buying the most expensive stuff either
Officemax seems for me the best "local" place to buy dvd-r..usually on sale for $1 each
This morning had the eject button "freeze" up..was stuck, removed the faceplate and tightened the lil screw optorite gave me down a lil tighter, possibly wasnt fully seated and sticking up a "hair" to high, works ok now
