S.M.A.R.T DISK MONITOR

Postby omega on Sun Aug 03, 2003 11:14 pm

For some reason i was bord and decieded to enable this option in my bios. Now when i started my pc it detected and wrror on one of the drives i got. I've done many tests and the drive is fine no errors reported, the drive has been going for over 2 years with this smart error message. Now my question is, how do i get rid of this SMART warning. It haults the booting sequance untill i press F1. I have disabled, flashed my bios and it will not remove. I also formated and done a /MBR on the driv. Any ideas???

The drive may be dead/dying if you're getting the SMART error...what's the exact error message? And what brand of drive is it? Check the manufactures web site for explanations of said error message; and what action you'll need to take (return the drive, run one of their drive diaganostic programs, etc)...

Use this program, here's the link:
Speed Fan

It acces the SMART code of your drive and tells you if your dirves is dying or not. I guess that your drive is too old now to claim the warranty but check if it still has it. Good Luck!

it just says S.M.A.R.T has detected an error on drive... we recommend that you backup your data right away.

it's a Maxtor hdd 30gigs 7200rpm

that's about what it says.

Well then you can't get rid of that error. Just disable the SMART option on your bios. It could be that your drive is really dying or an error of your HD's SMART mechanism. Either way you should check if your HD has some warranty left or start shopping for a new HD.

Have you tested the HD in another machine? You should also check the cables?

Then it could be your mobo, you should search for a website with support for your mobo and see if someone else is having the same problem. If you tested your drive in a 2nd PC with SMART support and it didn't detected any error chances are that your HD is just fine. Sorry that I can't be of any more help but there's nothing more that occurs to me right now that you can do.

The problem seem to be in what the Spin Retry Count is stating

The value should be above the threshold point in this case (It could just be how the drive works)

In the case of a real problem being cased by this you should notice strange idle or power-on sounds coming from the drive

If it gets worse your drive is about to fail (listen for sounds out of the ordinary first)

look at maxtor to see if they have a recertify utility (it will format your drive but may fix the problem if not the control might have gone bad)

Guys,

Try this utility:

http://www.ariolic.com/activesmart/

It will let you know whenever the values change in your drive (even the Temperature). It loads at boot time and keeps an eye on stuff. Better start backing up your data and start saving for a new drive.

Cheers.

Maxtor does offer a utility with this functionality. It's called PowerMax. I'd recommend giving this a try.
