Looking to replace my LiteOn 52246S with a combo drive

Postby wicked1 on Sat Oct 04, 2003 7:30 pm

As you can see in my signature I already have a samsung 352B combo it is alright but not near the quality of the LiteOn that I have. It is also alot pickier with media. What do you guys think of LiteOns combo drives? I really want to replace my liteon 52246S so all 4 drives can read DVD;s and 2 can record for 2 on the fly recordings. All comments are welcome.
Anyother combo drives worth anything?

Edit: For some reason my sig didnt show up.

That just goes with the territory. If you were to get a purebred Samsung CD-RW drive, then I bet the quality would be better than a half-bred combo drive. I know my purebred LG burners are better quality than my half-bred LG combos, but the quality of the combos are not bad by any means. You can probably notice that the quality your purebred Lite-On burner is better than your half-bred (or quarter-bred, I suppose) Sony DRU-500AX. Again, it's not that the Sony has poor quality, it's just that a purebred is better than a half-bred (or quarter-bred) in this case. :)

BTW, there is no review of a new Lite-On combo drive here at CDRLabs, but from what I've read on other sites about the Lite-On and comparing it to combos by Samsung, I would give the edge to Samsung. I would also suggest LG combos.

Personally speaking I'm am one that is not for combo drives, no matter what brand it is. I always beleive that having two physical drives in your PC is better than one, for the following reasons:

1: If you were to make a copy of a CD, you dont have to do any swapping
2. If the drive stuffs up, you will have nothing to back you up for any form
of software installation.

3. If the drive stuffs up, it could cost you more to repair due to it being a
combo drive instead of a one drive.

And finally keep the 52246S you have, as they're a excellent burner and buy an additional cd-rom or dvd rom drive.

do you know if the Sony combo drive is the same as this Lite-On ?
the Sony CRX-300 (or 330? i'm not sure).

the Sony combo can be gotten here relatively cheap, thinking about it for a relative's computer.

I bought my LG 48/24/48/16 combo drive to suppliment my LiteON 52/24/52 just in case something goes wrong.

I use it primarily as a DVD player. My older LiteON 163D was driving me nuts with that ABS so that's why I got the LG.

Why not read the Reviews and compare for yourself? :) Ian has reviewed several LG and Samsung combos.

Hi dodecahedron. Long time! Yep, the Sony CRX300 is the exact same drive as the Lite-On 48161H, just with different firmware. You can flash it with the Lite-On firmware though.
