For Xbox I would recomend an old 5400 RPM HDD, that would be because of heat purposes, using a 7200 RPM drive creates too much heat for a small thing like xbox.

I have put 7200 rpm drives in about 25 XBOX's now without a hitch. The CPU never gets about 55 no matter how long they are played or you compile Linux software.

Do you have a SATA enabled motherboard? From what I read SATA doesn't really give a good performance edge due to the PCI bus limitation, except in RAID 0 configuration...

Yup,

Asus P4S8X. All my drives are SATA. I have one Western Digital Raptor (36GB) and a Maxtor DiamondMaxPlus 9 (120GB)

The space is enough for what I do, and the speed is great, especially on the Raptor, which is where I keep Windows along with all the programs I have. I keep stuff like music (8.5GB) on the 120GB. Right now, I have about 12GB left on the Raptor.
