Well I just had my first WD drive dies yesterday. A just over 3 year old 20 gig, it started clunking all of a sudden and eventually wouldn't read anymore and stopped the other drive with it from working too. Luckily it didn't damage anything else and it mainly was just storing old data.
Gave me an excuse to install my new 120 gig SE drive that I'm still slowly redoing what I want on.
Always compartmentalise your stuff if you have many drives, you won't lose evrything when it dies. I can still boot to the last 2 versions of my OS if the main boot drive fails. Plus I can go back to yesterdays version if I don't like the way my new install is going or need to run somehting I haven't had time to redo. Basicly untill now I've had no failers with a WD in like 10 years.

I have been really happy with my Maxtors. (currently running 3, and I have two more 4-year-old Maxtors that still work fine). I haven't bought WD in a while because of bad experiences, but I think that my two WD drives were just from a defective batch of drives, or they were damaged in transit to the store where I bought them.

Smal ticking noises are probably just the drive seeking and working. Mine made a BIG clank, clank, clank noise, and even when it did read it was twice as loud as it had been before it died completely.

I recommend any Western Digital, Maxtor, or Seagate drive. 2MB and 8MB don't make a huge difference, but 8MB has its nifty features. Just make sure the drive is ATA/100 or ATA/133 and 7200RPM. With the prices of large capacity drives so cheap nowadays, you can get a 120GB or above for way below retail!

Very nice! I have an IBM drive in my laptop! (I think it was made right before IBM sold their HDD devision to Hitachi.)

How are IBM laptop drives? I'll never recommend their desktop ones.

The earlier true IBM non glass platter desktop drives are very good and fast too. Now they are made by Hitachi and the quality is gone.
I have a 40 and a 80 in here and both have worked great so far and are fast and quiet. I also have a 20 gig Maxtor I got when they first released 7200 rpm 2 meg cache drives and it has been fine for a long time so far. The only drive to flat out die completely on me was that 3 year old Western Digital I all ready mentioned. I'm still getting my new 120 WD 8 meg SE drive setup with what I want so I'm going between it and the 80 gig IBM that is my old boot drive.
Too bad they are all starting to make one year warrantys on the normal grade drives and getting picky on warrantees now.

So does eBay. :) I won three brand new, retail boxed Maxtor 160GB 8MB cache hard drives a few months ago for about $105 each, that's with shipping included. No rebates, just good old-fashioned savings.

The 40GB platter 2.5 drives are popular among storagereview forum members. I'd like to have some 80GB drives with 40GB per platter but they cost two times as much as 20GB platter drives.
