Where did you find Memorex 4x +R media that cheap?

It was a sale price at BestBuy ($29.99); I then did a PriceMatch to Staples for the extra 10% of the difference which was $30 since Staples had it for $59.99!!!! That made it $3 off per 25 pack - hence $27...

I was tempted to complain to corporate about the manager at my local Staples; he lied about their PM policy, saying they don't price match instant rebates, even after I heard him ask his emplyee if it was an instant rebate or a mail-in rebate. The other two local Staples stores were better, although in both cases the manager had to tell the CSR that they would PM, after the CSRs in question, who apparently hadn't been trained enough said "no" initially. One woman kept saying they "don't PM online", even though it was a BestBuy ad. The manager had to explain to her that it was "BEST BUY!!, not some internet merchant".
The other one also had an incorrect reason for initially saying they couldn't PM. Luckily those two managers knew their jobs well.

I don't know if this has been posted, but Plextor NA now has the media list up; it might be identical to Plextor Europe's list - I didn't compare the two.

They are both RICOHJPNR01, means they should be the same, but you can never know :) I use the Platinum myself, no problems and 8x speed.
I see nierle lowered the price. They had them for 49€ last week, so I bought mine somewhere else for 36€. But I saw some on ebay.de for 33€ after that.
One thing about the Platinum, they have the most ugly label I ever saw. Some kind of 3D-Hologram. I think you will get Eye-Cancer, if you look too long on it :D (But they are the cheapest with best quality here)

have you read the article in the new c't? the quality doesnt look very good for the ricoh type discs there (they also used a 708a and burned them 8x). i dont know if its the same for all ricohjpnr01 discs, but i doubt there are huge differences between them.

haha, i thought the label of mine was just f*cked up, something like a printing mistake :p

Yes, I was really surprised by this. My KProbe scans doesn't look THAT bad. Maybe it was the 1.01 FW? Mine has 1.00, but I fear after getting it back from RMA, it will have 1.01, too. :-?

Yeah, was my first thought, too. But both of my 25pcs boxes and the one my friend bought from another retailer? Must be a whole container with misprinting. :)

I was hoping to get more media support with this 1.02 firmware. 1 out of my 2 medias not supported are now supported. I bought Fortis 4x dvd-r and MMore 1x dvd-r. The MMore are now supported but not my 10-pack of Fortis

I doubght it, generic media is generally low quality. Especially when it comes to DVD-Minus, because there are more low quality manufacturers for DVD-Minus.

Yeah, the plextor have below average media support for DVD-R/RW discs....

Try to stay with the + format discs or get good brands of DVD-R (Verbatim etc).

I can definately attest for this. My plex has yet to burn a single dvd-r that I own. I tried REAL cheap media and some not so cheap media and it refuses to make a complete burn.It usually blows the disk with a Track Follwoing ERror. The TDK 4X +Rs though burn awesome on it with no slowdowns at all now.

Now try some expensive DVD-R media, this drive appears to only like the best media.

I have only used cheap DVD-R media that I bought at CompUsa when it was on sale over a month ago. The first 10 pack was made by Optorite and the one I'm using now are Princo. Both say 1X but burn at 2X. They have all worked. The DVD+R's were also Optorite 2.4X CompUsa Discs and also worked OK. I had a disc closing problem on the first one but closed it with DVDDecrypter. I then went back to Nero 5.5.10.42. I have not had that good of luck with the 4X Memorex I bought. The first one burned OK but only at 4X with Firmware 1.00. I then flashed to 1.02 to see if that would work better. The first 4X Memorex did not close and didn't close with DVDDecryter. That was coaster #1. So much for Nero 5.5.10.42. I then burned the next using the Roxio software that came with my drive. It burned OK with PowerRec set on but at 4X. I then turned off PowerRec and selected 8X. The drive flashed amber for quite a while then nothing but another coaster, #2. I then turned PowerRec back on and it looked like it burned OK at 4X but wouldn't read in the 708a or my Liteon 165H DVD drive. I checked it and it didn't appear to be closed and I couldn't close it. Coaster #3. I said forget this shit and went to bed. The next night I burned 3 Memorex 4X in row just fine using Nero 5.5.10.42. All are out of the same 25 PK spindle. So I have no idea what went on. So far the cheap discs seem to work better. Not one coaster out of 23 burns. Go figure.

I am using FW 1.02 and Nero 6.0.0.19 to burn with Adaptec ASPI 4.71 (0002) on a P4 2.6c@3.3Ghz, Asus P4C800 mobo, OCZ Gold PC3600 memory.

I have had success with Memorex 4x +R media (RICOHJPNR01) at 8x, full 4.36GB DVD burned in 8:20, reads back perfect.

I had had moderate success with el cheapo genric 4x -R media with ID LONGTEN001. The burner burns these fine at 4x but cannot read them back very well past 4GB dropping to 2-3x and finally erroring out at 4.24GB. Interestingly enough the Hitachi DVDROM in my laptop can read these discs fine all the way to the end so it may actually just be a 708a incompatibility thing. These discs can also be read by my PS2 (with DMS3 v2) although I have no way of confirming it can read past 4.24GB. I guess if one of the games that use the full DVD locks up near the end I will assume that its a problem.

Tomorrow I am going to go out and buy a few samples of other media around town to see what the burner likes best. I can get my hands on Optodisc/Fotis 4x +- media, Princo 4x -R and various other non generic name brands. Hopefully one of the two generic ones will work perfect as they are cheap (in the $1/disc range).

While using NERO 5.5.10.45 Plextor ...

Firmware 1.02 : MEMOREX DVD+R 4x can be used and the result is perfect
Firmware 1.03 : MEMOREX DVD+R 4x cannot be used, at the end, when the lead-out will be written, the "invalid field in command"-error occurs.
Greetings

Well, hopefully Memorex will work for me, since I just updated to firmware 1.03 since I couldn't use the Maxells I purchased at all until I went to 1.03 firmware. I'm hoping my 25 pack of Memorex 4x DVD+Rs will arrive in the morning, so I'll keep you posted.

Good luck with the Memorex. I just brought back the remaining 9 unburned and 7 coasters to Best Buy out of a 25 Pack of Memorex 4X (Ricoh JPNR01) and bought a 25 Pack spindle of 4X TDK. I brought back an unopened 25 Pack of Memorex 4X to CompUsa right after that and had to fight with them to exchange for other discs since I was past the 14 Day return policy. I got some more cheap CompUsa branded discs which were on sale and have worked perfectly up to now with 1.00,1.02 and 1.03, both + and - discs. Best Buy actually charged me for the 9 that did burn but that was fair. Out of the 9 that burned OK I had to close half of them using DVDDecryter or BatchDisc since they got an Error in Nero. Those had invalid command before the Could not end disc at once error. The ones that came up with the Session Fixation error closed in BatchDisc but would not work. I used both Firmware 1.02 and 1.03 with the same results. I hope the 4X TDK's work better. I never did get an 8X burn from the Memorex, maybe the TDK will work at 8X.

Good So Far

Postby Impulse on Mon Oct 27, 2003 5:00 pm

Well, I just got my 25 pack of Memorex DVD+Rs from Amazon and so far, so good. I've burned 4 DVD+Rs using DVD Decryptor and all burned at an average of 7.4x, maxing out at 8.1x. I've also burned 4 data discs using Nero 5.5.10.42 and they all burned around 8 minutes - 8 minutes and 30 seconds. So, at least for now, I would have to say these Memorex discs are working just fine and dandy for me using the 1.03 firmware. Hopefully it will stay this way. :)

The TDK 4X I bought on sale work great at 8X and no failures at the end of the recording when closing the disc like some of the Memorex had. They have the same media code RICOH JPNR01 but work much better. Lots of people have had trouble with the Memorex. Hopefully you got a good batch. I have been using 1.03 firmware and Nero 5.5.10.54.
