I thought it might be usefull to creat a thread to list compatable drives which work with Nero CD-DVD Speed C1 reporting as well as a thread to post scan results.
Please list the drive model the firmware version and weither it works or dosn't.

Yeah, according to Erik the C1 errors can be measured with the Plextor Premium and Lite-On writers.

well...what a surprise! :o

anyway, there are already testing utils for those drives.

the big question is: will it work with any others ??? <very wishful...>

in the meanwhile, this gives us nothing new.
true you can now use the same testing util for both types of drives, whereas till now it was a different program. but this still doesn't enable comparisons, because each drive brand could (is?) reporting errors differently, possibly different kinds of errors.
still no uniformity.

David: Thanks for drawing my attention to this!
Here are my results:
Code: Select all
CDRW LiteOn LTR 48246S    SS0B  works (see below)
CDRW Tevion (Acer) 4x4x32 3.LS  error
DVD  LiteOn LTD 163       GH4W  error

The results on the LiteOn burner agree very well with KProbe results. Here a pressed audio disc of questionble quality:

These scans were done a month apart.

Somewhat off-topic. The new version brings a host of improvements! :D Some further wishes though:
- I would prefer to be able to specify a file name when saving an image rather than having to rely on systematics defined in setup.
- Multisession CDs aren't handled properly. The vertical line marks the end of the first session and scanning "sticks" there
- A quality test on a VCD still doesn't work. After ca. 1 second into spinup, the test aborts (gracefully- it used to lock up).

I guess this means that there isn't a general MMC command or similar available for this. Funny, though, because other brands (e.g. LG) use MediaTek chipsets too.

Doesn't work:
Drive: Plextor PX-W4012TA firmware 1.05
Drive: Plextor PX-W2410TA firmware 1.04

At least the scans from the new CD speed appear to be consistant with K-Probe so far... but we'll have to see how they compare with Q-Check as well!

Dang it! I wish I was home right now so I could download it and play with it! grr...I'm jealous!

I think the results may be different; if I remember right, Q-Check only supports 24x reading.

True, but 24x Q-Check reading is almost exactly the same as 4x reading on my LiteON 48125W :D (Guess which test I prefer doing 10 billion times a day!)

By the way, can someone else confirm that the Plextor Premium can NOT return C1 errors with the new CD Speed? I tried it out, but only my LiteON 48125W worked, not the plextor premium!

I tried CDSpeed 2.10 with my 32123S and one of my 52327S drives, and it seemed to work fine. I'll have to do a comparison between CDSpeed and KProbe later. Interestingly, it works when my 32123S is attached to a PCI IDE controller card, while KProbe doesn't. :D

I did notice one strange thing; though. Sometimes, when I start a scan, a very large number of errors (definitely wrong for the disc) is reported. If I stop the scan and start it again, the results look normal. Has anyone else seen this problem? This happens on both my 52327S and my 32123S, which are on different PCs (I haven't tried it yet with my 48125W). The PC with the 52327S is running WinXP SP1 Home with all updates, and the PC with the 32123S is running the original version of Win98 with all updates. The 52327S is connected to the motherboard's onboard IDE controller (VIA KT133A chipset), and the 32123S is connected to a PCI IDE card (Sil0680 chipset).

CDRecorder: Yup, I've had the same problem, but it goes away if you stop the test and re-start it again. I have *NO* idea why :-?

I noticed that stopping and restarting helped, too. Oh, well; it's a new feature that may still need a few bugs worked out, but I think its great! :D

I noticed this too, but decided to ignore the problem and see what the tool is capable of. The first disk I threw at it was rather rotten... I've found, too, that KProbe or CD Doctor also (rarely) get confused after an extremely bad disk and it's better to restart the program.

Me too.

I thought with this version that spins up first disappear those errors but no.

I,m glad with the new version, also it has graphic save of various tests.

Sony 52x24x52 hacked to Lite-on V6S0D
Original Sony firmware also works.

I am using the older V6S0D firmware, because the newer V6S0F causes problems with my drive. It will make it spin up and down repeatedly when trying to write to the disc. Here are my results of some burned copies I just made. Are these C1 errors acceptable? How many C1 errors are too many? Look at the odd speed graph of the Game Data CD's I copied. I noticed the program going back and redrawing the speed graph. weird results. The Game CD's had NO copy protection. Why is the speed so much slower for the other CD's except for my first DATA CD which was read at 53x?

Your C1 error rates are very low; that's great! :D There's no particular rule for what is good and what is not except that there should never be any C2 errors. I consider a burn acceptable if I get a C1 average of 10 or less, and 3 or less is good, but you can have a C1 average in the 10s or even higher, and you should be able to read the disc back just fine. Of course, the error rates do change from drive to drive, so these results can't be taken as an absolute measurement.

Edit: I haven't seen the strange image results that you are seeing, but I have the "show speed" option disabled. Try turning that option off; maybe it will look normal.

I have found one other bug, though. The progress indicator reaches 100% well before the end of the error scan, and it finishes at beyond 115% (at least on my full test disc).

I tried CD-DVD Speed 2.10 on my LTR-48125W (VS0D) and my LTR-12101B (LS38), and it worked on both. It didn't work when the 12101B was on an IDE controller, but it works fine when the 12101B is on the motherboard's onboard IDE controller.
