Did any "security warnings" pop up when you ran Windows Update? If so, did you click "yes" or "no" for them?

Do you have your NIC or modem drivers installed?

Do you have broadband or dial-up internet access?

Did you register and/or activate with Microsoft?

Do you have popup or banner ad blocking software? Sometimes it will cause a problem like this.

I don't know if the worm caused it, but after that, I'd recommend that you erase the hard drive and start again with a clean install of Windows.

I don't think so; just the OS drive/partition. Make sure you scan the entire computer with your virus scanner if you haven't already (but it sounds like you did).

Good; I'm glad that there aren't any more viruses or worms. I must say, reformatting doesn't usually cause such problems, though.

Do you have a hardware firewall (for example, many routers have one built in) that you could enable between your computer and your internet connection while you download the updates? This might prevent any worms from being able to get to your computer through security flaws while you're installing the patches.

Did you try re-installing Windows yet?

Edit: I meant to say that having the router was a good thing. I'd recommend that you have a firewall on your network connection, especially before you've applied all of the patches to Windows. Your router probably has a firewall feature.

I'm not sure how that would help; you should be able to run Windows Update on your computer. I think that something is just corrupted with your current XP installation.
