rom or burner?

How fast is too fast?

rom or burner?

Postby stretch on Sat Nov 29, 2003 8:47 am

My pioneer dvd 106s has died, I am wondering wether to get a replacement DVD rom or save my pennies and get a burner instead? Is there an advantage of having a DVD rom and a DVD burner or will a burner suffice for both?

stretch, sorry to hear your drive died. Personally, I believe a burner would suffice. The only advantage to having both would be to copy directly from DVD to DVD. With only a burner, you'd have to copy to the hard drive first, then swap disks and burn the files/image you just created on the hard drive.

I don't mind the extra step, so only a burner is fine for me.
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure...

I'd suggest a burner, too. I have an LDW-411S burner, and I use it for reading, too.

I have three drives in my box. The CD-RW drive for CD burning at higher than the 16x that my DVD burner supports. The DVD burner for burning DVD's obviously. And finally, the DVD-ROM for playing DVD's, and espcially important, backed-up games that check for an ATIP since it can't read an ATIP.

As others suggested, Burner would do just fine. Basically, whatever ROM can do, burners will usually do it better. Try to go for a 8x burner or otherwise 4x is ok. Make sure it's dual format so you can use both types of media.
Stone walls do not a prison make,
Nor iron bars a cage;
Minds innocent and quiet take
That for an hermitage;
If I have freedom in my love,
And in my soul am free,
Angels alone that soar above
Enjoy such liberty. - Richard Lovelace
