Winter has started early here...

Postby VEFF on Fri Dec 05, 2003 8:13 pm

Talk about a fast start: we are getting hit (parts of the Northeast) with the first snow storm (actually a blizzard) of the season with 10 - 15 inches of accumulation by tomorrow evening, even though winter is still a bit over two weeks away.

Today we have a white Saint Nicholas (aka Sinterklaas)...

Happy holidays all!

I feel for you guys; it is always so cold in Minnesota this time of year.

The worst part for me is that my car's assigned parking spot is near the apex of a 90 degree turn, so that is where cars turning in too fast are most likely to slip... I have been lucky for years now though.

I have AWD, so I am not worried about my own car as much as others losing control around me.

I was juyst watching the Nightly News and one reporter (located in PA they said) called today a "$500 deductible day".

It's a good thing this happened at the beginning of a weekend, although I was on vacation this week and take a train to work anyway.

we got our first serious spell of cold weather the last 2-3 days too.

medium rains, can't even call it heavy rains by our standards...
and already some places look like venice because of fucked-up drainage systems (municipal officials should be shot) stupid 3rd world country </rant>

i wouldn't know about temps, but if only yesterday i switched from short-sleeved T shirt to long-sleeved it can't be that cold.

i really wish it would snow here. i miss snow.
it only snows rarely in the high places - Mt. Hermon, maybe a few high mountains in the Galilee, and Jerusalem etc.

The first longer "cold spell" is scheduled to start this weekend. It'll be below 0 (Celsius) tonight. Our winter weather here is pretty similar to Vancouver- fog and cold rain. At least 10° too warm in the winter, so when it does snow, it only lasts a couple of days at most.

I miss a proper winter. Where I grew up, Minnesota was considered semi-tropical.

They just increased the total snow accumulation again.
12 - 18 " now by tonight.
It is supposed to snow (heavily at times) all day today, with a blizzard warning (not watch) starting 10 AM and ending somewhere between 10 PM and midnight; it started yesterday around lunch time (varied somewhat by area since the storm was travelling).

I guess I'll just watch movies and play games (haven't done that in a while).

The highs today and tomorrow will be below freezing, so icing could be a problem, depending on how clean the streets get.
Hopefully they will salt accordingly...

It's been a bit chilly down here in Georgia. Many cold and rainy days...no snow just yet. I'll give it a week or so.

Wow, I saw some highlights from the New England Patriots - Miami Dolphins game (in New England) and the fans had to dig their way through the snow to get to their seats!

Supposedly, they received about 2 feet of snow before the game, and the stadium crews didn't have time to dig out all of the seats.

BTW, the Patriots won 12-0.
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure...

Gesundheit! :D

Let me second with Moose Jaw (always a favourite locale with foreign pundits and now home of a Spa), Porcupine Plain, Buffalo Narrows, Pemmican Portage, Indian Head, Elbow, Arm(p)it, Tramping Lake, Uranium City (now dropped to <50 population) and specially for the Yankees: (New York is big, but this is) Biggar.

Looks like you're having some really hefty snow there- they even brought some pictures in German television. You could send us some (I wouldn't mind).

Wow: two weekends in a row.
We are possibly going to get 6 - 12 inches of snow accumulation (in addition to rain/freezing rain) from Sunday to Monday inclusive, and it still isn't winter; at least it isn't supposed to be ;)
This time we won't have the luxury of a full day to clean up before the work week starts - what a mess!

Parking at the train station has been a major hassle, and now the snow piles will block even more spots than after the big storm we had last weekend - I have been getting up 30 minutes earlier than usual just to TRY to get a spot.
Meanwhile they are building a 5,000 space commuter train parking lot in the next town over!!!

More record lows are expected tonight into Friday morning.
- 5 tonight and wind chills of - 35.
To top it off we got hit with six inches of snow (they had predicted 3 - 4 inches) and it was still snowing when I left home early (just to get a spot at the good ol' train station) this morning.

Even with AWD, sophisticated traction control, and tires that have 90% or more of their tread (new car), it was very slick, especially going downhill at above 25 MPH.
As a colleague told me, it was simply too cold for the salt to work. er mentioned that they use sand up north, but it is messy.
They should use sand here too; there werenumerous accidents on the major highways this morning.

Next week it's suppose to ice and snow and all around be a pain. They projected this forecast 2 weeks ago. They're all excited here about the possibility of this stuff called "snow".1 flake here and everyone goes runnin' for the phone to call the boss and say " it's too snowed in for me,I can't make it in today".We call it free pass season.

We've had 2 days of straight snow again.

I've already got 3' of it on my lawn.
You 'aint lived until the snow plow goes by and leaves a 3' high wall of snow across the end of your driveway...

temp is +1F today as a daytime high (-17C).
With the wind chill factored in it's -13F (-25C).

It was so cold last night, that my moustache was frozen white (from my breath) when I was shovelling the end of the driveway. If you breathe through your nose, you can actually feel the snot freezing up...

And I'm working a highway dispatch console today :o
