linksys router + bit torrent + firewall

Postby dabadone on Wed Dec 03, 2003 3:12 am

i have been trying to download bit torrent files but they are extremely slow
the window that has the DL status has a yellow light, which means i have some sort of issue w/ the firewall and ports..

is anyone familiar with this
i know 192.168.1.1 is where i need to go, but then what?

From the BitTorrent website:

I'm behind a firewall/NAT, can I use BitTorrent?
Yes, but you will get better performance if other peers can connect to you. By default, BitTorrent listens on port 6881, trying incrementially higher ports if it's unable to bind, and gives up after 6889 (the port range is configurable). It's up to you to figure out how to poke a hole in your firewall/NAT.

Check your Linksys documentation or the Linksys website on how to open up ports. On my old linksys router, I had to click an "Advanced" tab to get at the Ports page.

When you installed your linksys your given a name and a password. Enter
http://192.168.1.1 and then go to port forwarding. Open ports 6881-6889.
