Media Compatibility With DVD Writers - Which Media Is Best?

General discussion about recordable CD, DVD and BD media and write quality testing.

Postby Kennyshin on Thu Nov 06, 2003 3:21 am

I got two types of DVD+R 4x media that are written up to 8x speed by Plextor PX-708A firmware version 1.02.

1. Lite-On bundled Ricoh/Ritek media (with RICOHJPNR01 ID)
2. Hong Kong made media of unknown source

The second media were recognized only at 4x speed.

Another datapoint for you. I purchased a 50 spindle of Arita +R 4x (RICOHJPNR01) but alas its pretty rare to get a full 8x burn out of them, it will usually switch down to 4x about half way through the disc. I guess all of the RICOHJPNR01 is not the same as the Memorex I have with the same media code work fine at 8x.

Edit: Have gotten 2/3rds through the Arita 4x spindle the discs further down the spindle work fine at 8x. Guess there were just a few half baked ones near the top.

Now the burner is perfect !

Postby matibaer on Sat Dec 27, 2003 11:52 am

Hallo together !

I have updated the PX-708A Firmware to version 1.04
and bought Nero 6 with the latest update to 6.3.

Nearly all errors are disappeared.
Only the "remaining-time"-fault still exists.

I burned different media at 4x and 8x, all are fine !
Greetings

Nero thinks the drive is writing at 8x throughout the disk (which is not possible) and the drive really starts out at 6x then continues up to 8x. The Remaining Time field in Nero gives the time for 8x writing throughout the whole disk, hence, it is in-correct.

This thread started out focusing on media compatibility with the Plextor PX-708A. I've now opened it up to ALL DVD writers.

They do not list their media prices, rather they say you have to call them, but their burner prices are good, so their media prices may be as well. Look for a 50 pack of Ritek in the $65 range.

Well, I know the Ritek DVD-R discs (DRD-47-4X-RDSM) burn fine at 4X in the Lite-On 851S with the latest firmware and then play in a Toshiba SD-4800 DVD player with no problems. Now this was only one movie I backed up (The Matrix), but it worked! :)

Also, I backed up The Matrix Reloaded and it worked as well.

UPDATE >> :o Crap, upon closer inspection, I looked at the plastic top thing for these discs without a spindle and it said "MADE IN TAIWAN". I was under the false impression that these were Made in Japan. Oh well, they gotta be better than the TDKs, Maxells and other crap sold at BestBuy and other stores, right? I didn't post the graph of the Nero CD/DVD Speed results, but here's the rest of the results:

WRITTEN on DISC cover plastic thing:
17-132-315/263578
DRD-47-4X-RDSM
MADE IN TAIWAN (engraved in plastic mostly under label)

WRITTEN on DISC:
RiDATA
H5-05L19312038617A07

SMARTBURN RESULTS:
1-0-0-0 S:LITE-ON DVDRW LDW-851S GS0H
Drive Type = DVD Dual
Disc Type = DVD-R (Single Layer)
Disc MID = 52 49 54 45 4B 47 (RITEKG)
Disc TID = 30 34 00 00 00 00 (04....)
Nominal Capacity = 4.38 GB
Manufacturer Maybe = RiTEK Corporation
SMART-BURN Speed Limit = 4.0X (Write)

NERO CD/DVD SPEED RESULTS:
Speed: 4X CLV (3.96X average)
Elapsed Time: 15.06
Note >> the graph makes a nice curve that dips down to just below 2X and then back up if this helps at all.

I just searched and I think this is the media I have:

http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia.php?s ... 0#comments

So, what's the verdict on these discs? Are they any good?

Why don't we standardize the posts in this thread?

I suggest that we do the following:

Record the Media ID of the disc, the certified speed of the disc, the visible serial numbers printed on the disc and the brand of the media. Also, record the drive used, the firmware, and the burn speed used.

Then we do a CD Speed transfer rate test, using the drive it was burned in, at maximum speed, and then post the image of the graph.

Additional info like what players it had problems on (if any) would also be welcome.

What do people think? I think it would go a long way into helping people find media that works on their drive... if ONLY on their drive at least.

BTW: I mentioned recording the serial numbers, because it will help determine what line was used for the media manufacturing, and also if the media is real or counterfeit, which is becoming more and more of a problem!

OK, what's the best way of getting the Media ID of the disc? Also, how do I do this CD Speed transfer rate test? I know I don't burn a lot of DVDs, but I would like to add that info to my post.

Since you're using a LiteOn burner, the official SMART-BURN tool from LiteOn will do the trick. This is what I use most often, actually.

DVD Identifier would also work (on any drive type).

And KProbe2.

As for CD/DVD Speed transfer rate tests, get Nero CD/DVD Speed (bundled with Nero, or if you don't have it, freely available from http://www.cdspeed200.com/ ). Run Nero CD-DVD Speed, and select the transfer rate test.

I believe that K-Probe 2 also has a transfer rate test, although I've never used it personally, it should in theory be very similar.

It is very similar & the results are identical, but it doesn't report the angular velocity. And I guess I still use CD Speed for reading tests just purely out of habit. ;)

I don't have a DVD-burner (yet), but will still make a couple of remarks.

Even the very first version of KProbe had a transfer rate test!

The nice thing about the CDSpeed quality test is that it combines the reading speed and BLER count in a single graph. Also it has a fixed time (or volume) axis, which really picks out partially filled discs. (You can get really distorted impressions of burn qualities with KProbe if you compare, say, a half-full disc with a full one). These are things I wish KProbe had. Unfortunately, I don't think you can change the scale on the BLER counts after scanning. :-? Kprobe has a more flexible display in this and other ways, so I still prefer it for BLER scans. But then, my functional optical drives are all LiteOns...

The quality scanning test in CD Speed would not be a good idea, since we are looking for disc/burner compatability more then anything here. So if I burn a disc at 8x on my Pioneer DVR-107, and pop it into my LiteON LDW-411s and so that I can do a quality test in CD Speed, but it still doesn't work in my Pioneer, then all I've learned is that my LiteON is more error tolerant then my Pioneer.

The discs should be tested in the drives that burn them, in my opinion, so that everyone will get an idea of what to expect on that drive from that media.
