Can you upgrade? Comp USA is having a sale, starting tomorrow, on XP Pro upgrade for $170 after instant rebate. I don't know if having something old like W98 would work or not.

Thanks for the tip, mdir. I have 2000 and 98SE, but don't want to do an upgrade. I like to do full installs...I'm mental that way.

You can do full installs, you just have to put in the old disk when it asks you to, to prove you own the old version.

XP Home Upgrade is about $100, and has most of the features of Pro.

If you can live without the Pro features, you can save quite a bit of money.

The pro version is just better and the features should have been included with home so I don't blame him for wanting pro.
At least that's my story and I'm sticking to it...... :P

aviationwiz-
Huh. Damn. Simple as that? So I don't need to do an overlay (install 2000/98SE THEN install XP Pro over it)?

UALOneKPlus & Dartman-
Heh! Yeah. I want the features in the Professional version and I prefer blue over green . Okay, kidding about the color.

that should work, it worked for 95 upgrade and also worked for 98. I think all you really need is win.com so it finds it then it can do a full install, it just wants to see a previuos version on a drive. I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure that's how it used to work.

Do some searching with PriceWatch or My Simon and see what you can find. I did a quicky search on PriceWatch and came up with a price of $ 137 for an XP Pro full version, non-OEM here: http://www.amamax.com/swspecialwinxpprdsp.html

I've never heard of the place but you might check with resellerratings to see if you'd trust them with your money. A few months back, I bought my full retail package of XP Pro for $180 so you should be able to beat CompUSA's price easily.

Yeah, $300 or so for the full version of XP Pro is fairly standard. I'd be a little worried about $137 for the full version of XP Pro (if it's not OEM); that is so inexpensive that it seems "too good to be true".

I couldn't agree more about $137 sounding too good to be true. I had reservations about posting the web site reference. I also did a search on My Simon and the best price I found there was $185 which seems more reasonable. (I bought my full version last spring for $180 so $185 doesn't seem too good to be true.)

You do your research, find a selection of prices, check them out with resellerratings.com and ultimately, you have to take a chance. You just have to decide how big a risk you are comfortable with.

I had no clue it costs that much. I got it for $5 bucks at school a few years ago.

Damn...didn't know Wal-Mart sold OEM stuff. Learn something new all the time. Not cheap, but they got XP Pro OEM for 198.98.

EASTOUTLET has it for $144.99 FULL OEM though. But I don't see any requirement to buy hardware with it.

OEM vs. RETAIL: it should be the same disc, just a slight difference the cd key (at least I think so).

Personally: I'd go OEM and save a few bucks.

TIGERDIRECT.COM has it for $159.99 but you have to buy non-microsoft hardware (ie: drive power cable for $3) with it. Note the picture is wrong in the Tiger ad.

Sounds like backups from Russia or somewhere that doesn't care about copyright laws. If you want to do that there are easier ways I think.

Thanks for posting, coadman. The input is appreciated. I DO want legit software. Coincidentally, a friend sent me this link questioning it: http://ibackups.net/

Do you suppose the email site I posted are actually backup copies, not originals?(the price would tend to make you wonder)

I would think so. Interesting site and all but then they say no support from manufacturer and these shoud be considered backup copies. I'd also be very afraid to give them any info.

I'm not sure how it is with the URL you supplied, coadman, but with the ibackups place, after digging around, I found a one liner about legally providing a backup of software titles...it's the responsibility of purchasers to adhere to licensing...yadda...something. But yeah...great price, but not legit.

Do you all think "this" is a legal, on the up & up, software? If it is,,that's certainly a good price.
