Need help with Samsung SW-252 B

Postby zArt on Tue Jan 20, 2004 11:15 pm

I bought the cd recorder described in the title, retail version.
The review of it that i read at Cdrlabs.com helped my decision.
But i´m a bit disapointed cause it seems that it can't write a cd of 52x n
700 Mb in less than 5 minutes, actually if the media is 52x or 40x it doesn't make a difference in the recording time.
I flashed the latest firmware (R701) with the firmware LiveUpdate feature from Samsung, but today i read the same review n they used R702 version. I searched the Samsungodd site n found out that there is a R703 version but only for Korea.
I´m a bit confused right now, can someone enlighten me please?
Why can't i write cds in 2.30 min like in the review?

my rig:
Athlon XP 1700+ @ 2300 Mhz, 400 Mhz FSB Watercooled
1 gig Samsung ddr333@400
Abit NF7-S
2 Harddisks 120 Gb each
Samsung SW-252 B
Samsung SD-616 Q
Club3d 9600 pro

Thanx in advance.

It's probably one of two things. Check to see if DMA is enabled. If it is, its probably your media. The drive is probably slowing down before its reaching 52x.

You might want to try the Korean firmware. It won't break your drive. In most cases the domestic (DOM firmware) has support for different media and/or features (Speed Boost, etc).

I use diferent media, like: MMORE 'Tatoo' edt 48x, MMORE 52x (which e writes only at 48x), EMTEC (BASF) 48x, Philips cd-rw 1x-4x, Platinum cd-rw 4x-12x, Sony 32x, Sky 52x,etc...
I bought a Memorex cd-rw 16x-24x that i never used cause Nero 6
reports a calibration error or something, i´ll try that one again.
How can i check if DMA is on, with NERO or Windows?

Thanx for the help.

Another thing, i downloaded the R702 used in the review but i can't download the flash utility, is it the same i downloaded n installed from SamsungODD? And if it is, how can use it?

Use Nero InfoTool. It's part of the Nero Toolkit installed with Nero. To activate DMA, see the appropriate FAQ in the FAQ's forum.

I checked the DMA status it´s currently Ultra DMA Mode 2 for Secondary IDE n Ultra DMA Mode 5 in Primary IDE.
Could it be the drivers of the chipset?
Nero's InfoTool freezes when retrieving information from SD-616Q DVD drive

Thanx

Try other media. In particular, some manufactured by CMC. If I remember right, that media worked well with the drive.

Today i flashed my SW-252B (retail) with the R703DOM.bin firmware using
SFDNWIN n my SD-616Q with F404.bin firmware using the MTKWinFlash utility, both were successfull.
I run a test to find n compare results. I used a copy of game cd with 79.54.17
min in the test n it was a bit disapointing cause the cd burner read it at 40x max speed but the DVD drive read it at 48x. What gives???
Recording an Audio cd with Nero 6 from the harddisk had the same result as before over 5 min on a 52x media that the burner recognizes as being 48x. Recording at 40x or 48x is the same, why's that???
I'm lost here, the new firmware didn't help.... :(
Also i enabled the speed control feature ( if i did it right ) n for now i didn't notice any differences.

Thanx in advance.

Not a good choice

I had the 252 drive before I got my Lite-On - I ended up returning it - see my posts at

http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic. ... highlight=

I had previous problems with Samsung's Combo drive as well.

Well my problem(s) with my SW-252B (retail) firmware R703dom isn't
any kind of buffer underrun. I don't remember recording any coaster at all.

I recorded a Sony 48x for a friend of mine n Nero 6 recognized it as 52x,
still it took 4:40 min to record from the harddrive.

About the Justspeed i remember disabling it in Nero but i saw no difference
at the time, i read the review at CDRLabs n i think they meant just that.

I´m gonna do some more tests, with other media if possible n then post here
the results.

Thanx for everything.
