In House Review - OptoRite DD0401 8x DVD±RW

Postby Ian on Tue Feb 03, 2004 10:34 am

Today CDRLabs brings you a review of OptoRite's new 8x DVD±RW drive, the DD0401. While affordably priced, this new drive features some of the fastest reading and writing speeds available. The DD0401 is capable of 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD-R/DVD+RW and 2x DVD-RW writing speeds and has a maximum DVD read speed of 12x. Of course, fast DVD writing speeds aren't the only thing OptoRite's new drive offers. The DD0401 also has features like 40x CD reading and writing speeds as well as support for technologies like BURN-Proof and HD-Burn. With HD-Burn, you can fit 1.5GB of data onto a standard 80 minute CD-R disc!

In this review we'll take a look at some of the features found on the DD0401 and see how it compares to some of the DVD±RW drives from companies like Plextor, Lite-On and Sony. Does the DD0401 have what it takes? Is it the best bang for your buck? You'll have to read the review to find out.

Yup, appears to be working now. When I clicked the link before, it took me to the list of reviews.

Nice review. Looks like Opto has some great results with Ricoh and MCC media. Looks like it writes to Ricoh better then my Liteon 811S and the Nutech DDW-081. I'm impressed. I almost got it over the Liteon. I almost regret it but not really. Though HD-BURN would be nice to have. I still got plenty of blank CDs I could fill up.

Nice review Ian! I knew there was a reason I liked mine...

One thing, though: HD-BURN = 1406MB or 1.37GB...1.5GB would be nice, though :)
On mine it tops out at 80x for HD-BURN read...also very nice.

A bit slower than the Plextor, and bit more picky about the media. But a GREAT drive none the less. I've been using nothing but TDK and Memorex 4x DVD+R w/o any problems. Verbatiums seem to work ok but only at 4x.

Just wish I could find a DVD-ROM that could read HD-BURN :(

Looks like you got yours to burn those Verbatium 4x DVD+R's at 8x. Mine sure won't. But I am using V120E firmware, not the 130E.

I have heard that the newer firmware worsen's the drive's read/write quality on HD-BURN discs...Thoughs? I use it more for HD-BURN than for DVD's right now (cheaper).

Hello!

Nice preview, Ian :)

This writer sure is not perfect, but the FW-support from Optorite is a good one.

But in Germany you can get no Original-Optorite, only the OEM-versions like from MSI. But MSI´s FW-support is not so good as Optorite´s, my MSI CR52-A2 FW from MSI had no MR-Support, but the Optorite-FW have it
Benq DW 1640 and 1650 , Plextor PX-755, Pioneer BDR-208 and 209D, LG GH24NSC0, LG BH16NS40 and 16NS55, Liteon ihas 124F and 324F, Pioneer DVR-215 and S21, Samsung SH-224DB and 224GB, and some more

Preview? Yeah, OptoRite puts out firmware updates almost as often as Lite-On... and with less bugs. I can't wait until they release the firmware update adding 8x DVD-R and 4x DVD-RW.

Sony confirmed a 8x DVD-R and 4x DVD-RW upgrade.
Sony does some research on firmwares for the drives themselves.
Now officially I haven't heard a announcement of Optorite, still I think the changes are very good in this case. Better as for most other anouncements including the ones of OEM resellers promising 8x DVD-R on Lite On drives.

One thing I noticed about the stats on this drive is that the MTBF rating is only 30,000. Other drives I have seen state 60,000.

That means nothing. I'm sure if you looked up OEM drives and their manufacturers, they would both certify drives for different rates. It's a rough guess-timate at best.

Any word on any book type setting software or firmware mod to set the book type in the future for this drive? :)
