Ritek 4x DVD-RWs

Postby dolphinius_rex on Tue Jul 27, 2004 6:40 am

I just got a couple samples in today... so far all I can say is even with firmware 1.18 the discs aren't burned properly by the Pioneer DVR-107.... in fact Nero showed a burn failure! :o The disc itself test fine for ~3/4 of the disc, and then starts barraling towards craptacularity. I'll post some scans later when I have the time, probably tomorrow evening when I've run a few more tests and burns.

I think next I'll see how the PX-712a handles these discs.

Well, maybe I'll try them in my NEC 2500a after my Plextor 712a then

Which firmware are you using? the official 1.07? or Herrie's 1.07V2 Beta5?

The Ritek DVD+RW (RICOHJPNW11) discs have been working great in my PX-712A.

Have you tried these Dolph?

Yeah, I've tried them... I consider them ok RWs... but I'm not overly impressed personally. I *WAS* doing some testing on them, but dropped everything when the much cooler 4x DVD-RWs came in :P

Update: The PX-712a can't burn Ritek 4x DVD-RWs either! :o I get a burn failure in Nero, and so far all the tests come out even worse then the Pioneer DVR-107's :-?

It's a good thing that people have reported this media works with the NEC-2500a... cause otherwise I'd think it didn't work on anything! #-o

What's the media code? Is it even supported in the drive? 'Cuz the use of a generic strategy usually will produce such results.

use the NEC2500 1.28 (HP420) firm!
thats the newest one for this drive.then you can burn them at 4x with better results as on verbatim dvd-rw 4x!

Well, that's all fine and dandy for people who know that... but what about all the noobs out there who don't know you can cross flash on the NEC 2500A?

As it is with official NEC 2500a 1.07 firmware, it burns successfully at 2x (code is RITEKW04 if I remember correctly), but there are still read issues on the latter part of the disc when being read back at 12x on the PX-712a... I'm pretty sure it won't have any major issues at 8x on my LiteON drive though (will test that later tonight hopefully!)

I just got some of these discs today as well.. RiDATA brand. Hopefully they're better than RiDATA's craptastic 8x DVD+/-R media.

Dolph:

Have you tried the new CloneCD 5.0? It now adds support for DVD read/write and it gets along great with my Plextor PX-712A though I have not yet tried Ritek 4X DVD-RW media.

MB

CloneCD 5.0.0.0 (beta) 2004-07-29:

• New: Added ability to read most DVD formats. Note: DVD must not be copy protected, use AnyDVD if it is
• New: Added ability to write DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW,DVD+R Dual Layer and DVD-RAM
• New: Added ability to erase DVD-RW and DVD+RW
• New: Added .dvd "split file" image format. This format works with FAT32 partitions and is compatible with VirtualCloneDrive.
• New: Added ability to write .iso and .udf formats created with other applications (e.g., Nero, DVD2One, DVDShrink or CloneDVD)

Code: Select all

No I haven't tried CloneCD of just about any flavour :P It won't really change write performance, since the writing strategys for the discs are built into the drive's firmware... so software can't really make the discs burn better.... although it's possible for software to screw up a disc's burn quality (not really fair for the software is it? :P )

Ian: Please post your findings in this thread if you don't mind. I'm sure we'd all benefit from your insight on the media (plus it wouldn't be coming from a confessed Ritek hater  ).

Even the latest 2510 firmwares don't support RITEKW04 :(
Strange that they implemented support in the HP firmware, and didn't add it back into the 2510 fws.

Even the new 2.16 without a changelog?

It doesn't look like it.
I did a brief search in the 2.16 firmware and couldn't find RITEKW04.
