Setting speed???

Postby savagcl on Tue Sep 27, 2005 5:40 pm

I have nero 6.6.0.16 and a high speed TDK cd-rw device plus a DVD DL
device.

The cd-rw has a speed of 48x24x40 and the DVD max is 16x. Nero will
only write to the cd-rw at 1x even if i put in a high-speed cd-rw.

The dvd only get 1x altho its max is 16x12x??. Same question, how to
increase speed.
The disk info tool shows a max speed of 40 but it dont happen. The device
is in DMA Mode2.

I did put in the dynamic speed patch but no-good.

How do i increase the speed?
Thank you,
Clif

a bit of a stretch, but maybe it's the media? did you try other media?

dodecahedron,

Thanks for the reply.

DVD Drive brand = GSA-4163B
CDRW Brand = TDK

I tried a High-Speed CD-RW that is rated as 48X but the most i could get
was 10X using nero. A DVD-RW i tried is rated as 2.4X (but only get 1X using nero). The DVD drive is rated as 16/8/16 X (but only get 1X using nero).

There is a firmware update but it says its not for OEM equipment.
I ran the nero info tool and here is an extract:

OK.
one thing, the LG 4163B drive has A101 firmware, i'm sure there's a newer firmware. update to the latest.

next. if you're not using InCD, uninstall it.

point of concern: from the above log

the TDK is in an external USB enclosure?
try disconnecting it.
do you have an IBM hard drive in an external USB enclosure?
try removing that too.

dodecahedron

In order to get the fullest infotools report i turned everythinh on.

The TDK is external (USB2) but i dont use it except in rare cases, other than that its left powered off.
Same for the external SATA harddrive, its powered off and disabled in
device manager.

INCD, its used for getting a cd to act like a floppy (drag & drop), right?
Small problem is, i use acronis trueimage for doing system
backup/restore and they said i needed INCD for acronis to work.

As i mentioned, there is a later firmware but a msg on that page said its
not for OEM versions of nero... The Gateway (my system) site shows
no firmware updates. I could try the latest firmware but not sure it would
work....

thank you,

right.
are you sure about needing InCd for the Acronis software? i find that unlikely and very suspicious.

yeah, if you drive is a Gateway OEM one, you should only use a firmware upgrade from Gateway. try contacting their support and ask if there's a firmware upgrade.
while you're at it see if they have anything to say about our current problem.

why don't you try uninstalling the Primary IDE chanel (on which the DVD drive is located) in the Device Manager and let Windows reinstall it ?

I can check with acronis just to be sure.

I hate gateway support but ocasionally you get one that knows which end
of a tower is up. I can check,

And i can do the primary deinstall.

Will post results here.

I chacked with acronis.
They use a third-party packet writing software (INCD is one of several that
can be used). At least 1 must be present for Acronis to work.

Sounds kinda flaky to me to use third party software when you never know
when it changes but there you have it.

I went and bought some DVD+R's (16X) and some CD-RWs (24X). I then
reinstalled nero after clearing it out using their tools. I also put the reg tweak in to show actual write speed.

I put in a DVD+R (16X) and burned a folder. The write speed (actual)
showed as starting at 7.0X at the finish it was 9.1X (since speed was
increasing, maybe(?) it would have hit 16X in a long dvd burn.. but i doubt
it!

I put in a CD-RW (24X) and it wrote at 12X. The same CD-RW wrote at
24X in the TDK (cd-rw) drive.

Conclusion:
1. The max write speed of the DVD drive is 16X (regardless of the DVD
speed being rated higher) (is there a higher speed for DVDs) . Havent seen
16X yet but maybe!
2. A CD-RW will only get half of the rated speed in the DVD drive but full
speed in the TDK CD-RW drive.
3. I dont like Nero, its to d*mn finiky and their backup software is a
bummer.
4. I'm going to buy the new EZCD Creator (7.5) and dump Nero.
5. I'm going to get a new DVD DL device.

Now,
Intel(R) 82801FB Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 2651 SATA Controller on
MB
Intel(R) 82801FB/FBM Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 266F SATA Controller on MB

Primary IDE Channel >>>> Master: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4163B (DMA2).
Primary IDE Channel >>>Master: ST3160023AS (DMA5) >>>>Slave: ST3160023AS (DMA5) (Slave is normally disabled and powered off)
Secondary IDE Channel >>>Not Applicable, Nothing there.

Intel(R) 82801FB/FBM USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 265C USB2 driver = TDK CD-RW Drive (normally powered off).

Boot device sequence = DVD, SATA, Ethernet, Floppy

Does the above seem right?

thanks,
