I thought it was an Optiarc AD7173a?

There's a pic of the drive here:

http://www.sony-europe.com/PageView.do? ... easeDetail

If the picture is accurate, that's definitely not a Lite-On. Bhairav is probably right. If I had to guess, its most likely an AD7173a.

The Sony AW-G170A is confirmed to be the same hardware as a NEC Optiarc AD-7170A and it can probably be cross-flashed to a NEC AD-7170A if you want to.

See the Liggy+Dee Optiarc 7170 and 7173 firmware page over at CDFreaks.

The new Lite-On's have a plastic disc on top, similar to the DW1640 and DW165x.

Ian, which model is that? The top part looks EXACTLY the same as the DW1640 sitting on my desk.

It's the AOpen DSW1812P which is (I think) based on the Lite-On LH-18A1P. I won't know until Lite-On sends me one (hint hint.. where is it Lite-On?).

The front and back of the drive look very Lite-On-ish. The top though, is very BenQ.

Cool. It's good to see that LiteON is incorporating some BenQ technologies into their own drives :D

well, look at the picture of the LH-18A1P from Lite-On's website
http://www.liteonit.eu/eu/DOWNLOADS/ODD ... 0drive.zip
the top doesn't look like what Ian posted.
maybe that AOpen is a BenQ not a Lite-On ?

Yeah, I saw that pic. I think its simply stock footage and not a picture of the actual drive.

Here are pictures of the front and back. The front is flatter than Lite-On's past drives but its still looks similar. The back is nearly identical though.

Here's an actual picture of the LH-18A1P that hwupgrade.it took at IFA. Unfortunately, you can't see the top of the drive.

yeah, i also thought it might be an old photo, not an actual one of the new drive.

i can see now why you thought that the AOpen is a LiteOn. though i must say i'm surprised, AOpen (used to?) make their own drives (and others' too!). i don't recall an AOpen being a rebadged other drive.
(maybe Ricoh really long ago?)

as for the flat faceplate, there have been LiteOns like that too. i have a LTR-52327S (black) that has the exact same flat bezel.

could this be some proof of some kind of Phillips-LiteOn collaboration ?

AOpen used to rebadge Ricoh drives. They even tried their designs (1608, etc) but the results weren't that great. They then partnered with Lite-On in late 2005. Since then, they've all been Lite-On rebadges.

From an old DigiTimes article:

AOpen claims that it expects to turn profitable in the first quarter of 2006 after forming a strategic alliance with Lite-On Technology. AOpen will still keep its ODD product line, which currently contributes about 30% to its business and ships 300,000 units monthly, the company said. The cooperation with Lite-On is expected to help AOpen avoid higher production costs and patent fees while ramping up its production output.
