Test Results of 8X Burners Using Ricoh 8X DVD+R Discs

Postby Telstar on Mon Jan 19, 2004 4:11 pm

Here's probably the first comprehensive test of 8X DVD burners currently available using the true 8X DVD+R discs (MID code: RICOHJPNR02):

English Translated Version of 8X Burners Using Ricoh 8X DVD+R

Original Japanese Version of 8X Burners Using Ricoh 8X DVD+R

The test results indicate that these Ricoh branded 8X DVD+R discs had very good write quality from almost all the 8X burners, except maybe the Nu DDW-081 (converted from DDW-061).

On a side note, since these true 8X rated DVD+R discs only appeared on the Japanese market recently and costing around US$3.50 per disc, all those fake Ritek 8X (actually 4X rated) DVD+R discs sold earlier on-line were more like an intentional fraud than an unintentional mistake as claimed by Ritek.

Those graphs are quite un-stable with the Benq and NU drives.

KProbe's look OK, PI substantially increases over time with all drives except the Sony. The NU was completely unable to handle this, I'm thinking that may have to do with the fact that it is an overclocked 6x. Also, the PO substantially increases with the LDW-811S, and the PX-708A (USB 2.0 Conversion)

Genuine 8x Ritek media have also been available for some time now and they have mfr ID "RITEK...R03". So while most 2.4x and 4x Ritek media are RICOHJPN discs it looks like Ritek will use its own dye for the 8x media it sells under its own name.

If you mean the cdspeed graphs it's because of the running OPC technology all Philips based writers use so they are not "un-stable".

Wow.. the results with these discs look great. Much better than what some are seeing with Verbatim's 8x DVD+R discs. I can't wait til they show up in the US.

Speaking of which, what is the story with Meritline and thier 8x Discs

Last I read in thier forum, they are still sending out the "2.4x-4x" discs, which I assume means RICOHJPNR01. That happening even after they claim they fixed up the problem with Ritek and were only shipping the "real 8x discs" from then on.

It's probably not a coincidence that both the Benq and Nu Tech drives use the Philips chipset. Those results may indicate that a firmware update is in order to optimize for the Ricoh media.
