Is there **any** certified 52x media yet ?

Postby Ben Ifin on Tue Dec 03, 2002 2:58 am

Looking for certified 52x media - ie: media that writes at a full 52x speed *and* is not slowed down by the various burn-proofing systems ...

ie: much "certified" 48x media will write at 52x but it is no quicker than at 48x because of burn-proof-like activation

Where I live, I *can* get hold of Taiyo Yuden certified 48x [ gold surface ] in a spindle of 100 incl. 100 soft wallets for $US 40 ....

Apart from the price issue [be it good or bad], will the T/Y certified 48x discs write at 52x *without* being slowed down by the burn-proof-like features ?

I used the Mitsubishi 48x (Sonic Azo) to burn at 52x. Burn 670Mb of data in around 2:40min and also no error when doing surface scan in CDSpeed. Besides, I also used some 40x CDR from Prodisc to burn at 52x and the result is musch the same with the 48x Mitsubishi. So far no error occur when burning at 52x using lower speed media. :)

Ben, it really depends on the drive. Lite-On's 52x writer was able to write at 52x to most of the 48x media I tried.

I haven't seen Memorex's 52x media for sale anywhere. I've only seen their 48x at one place.. CompUSA.

Hi Ian !

So what about the media being "affected" by the activation of burnproof-like features .... ?

What I'm getting at is that my experience is that much 48x media *WILL* burn at 52x, but *NO* quicker in terms of time taken - presumably because of the influence and activation of the burnproof-like features ....

For example, if you look at the table of various media you tried in your 48x Sony review [excellent by the way] and the various times you got, these times are virtually no different to the various times you got in your tables in the reviews of the Cendyne 52x or Asus 52x .....

This doesnt really make sense, because we know that a 52x burner, all other things being equal, should be around 10 - 15 seconds faster than a 48x...

So to me, if a 52x burner is burning on 48x and 52x media, and the time taken is the same ['ish] then the intervening factor *MUST* must be the burnproof-like featues "kicking-in because the media is not fully 52x "certified" ......

This is why I am looking for 52x media that burns at 52x and is *NOT* affected by the various burnproof-like features.

I think I get what you're saying. Essentially, you're looking for media that is rated at 52x and will work at those speeds with some of the newer writers.

I'm not sure what media you're comparing, but if you look at the Sony and CenDyne reviews and compare say Lite-On's 48x media, there is a difference. While small, the CenDyne is about 5 seconds faster at 52x. You're probably not going to see a difference if you used media rated at 52x. 52x is 52x. But yes, I did find media that would not write at 52x and the writing times were very similar to the Sony when writing at 48x.

i've had no problems with burning at 52x with some 16x certified fuji (TY) media. have two new spindles of 48x certified fuji that i will assume will work equally well :)

I couldn't burn 16x TY media at 52x either. The ATIP was the same as my 24x TY stuff.

in that case, you don't say the media was written at 52x, you say it was written at 48x.
that's just what the burnproof (etc.) technology does - lowers the burning speed to match the media's capabilities.

Ben

you must also take into account that using the same media on different 52x burners will give different times, depending on the CDRW drive. so in theory it is possible that burning at 52x on one 52x drive (without "burnproof-like feature" interference) will actually be slower than burning at 48x on another drive, because the difference between 48x and 52x burning is so small.

My local CompUSA (Grand Rapids, MI) had 52x certified Memorex (CMC) on the shelf on Saturday. They even had a sale on them going on if I recall. Still, I rarely write @ 52x anyways, and I have plenty of Fuji 48x media around when I want to go that fast. I personally would trust those 48x discs over the Memorex ones any time because I feel that Memorex "cheaps" out all the time. For instance, I have a 100 disc spindle of 40x Memorex TY discs that smart burn will not allow to burn above 40x, I also have several Fuji 40x spindles that will all burn @ 48x and some 16x HP TY discs that easily burn at 40x. So even though they are using quality media, I am not so sure that they didn't just re-label some 16x or 24x discs with a 40x label and call it good. Not a lie, I suppose, but just a "cheap" way of purportedly being first-to-market with their stuff.

Ian,

I've noticed in recent tests that you used the Ciba/Plasmon 52x CD-Rs. I'm assuming that they're the ones with the Ultragreen dye (certified up to 56x) that I've read about. Where did you get those?

i got to talking with one of the guys from Ciba and they asked Plasmon to send me some to test. They work pretty well.
