2.4x or 4x?

Postby onlyCOpunk on Wed May 28, 2003 7:49 pm

Ok, I'm in the process of purchasing a DVD+ drive. Now when I search around for prices, I find that the 2.4x drive are relatively cheaper, and from hearing everybody talk 4x media isn't that cheap.

From years of buying computer products I've learned that buying the newest technology is good, but not good for the wallet as the prices will always fall very quickly, but as soon as they do, something new comes.

Long story short, should I go for a 2.4x drive or a 4x drive? I'm not a real speed demon, but having the best thing would be nice.

If you don't NEED a 4x Drive, go with a 2.4x drive. Unless you plan on doing a lot of DVD Burning, 2.4x is fine. I have a 2.4x Ricoh 5125 and I have never even thought of getting another drive for speed or anything.

I also only use it like once every few months.

Nevermind, I jsut solved my own problem. I found the NEC ND-1300A drive from $219 so I picked it up. I was also having a terrible time deciding between + and -, well I now I don't have to.

something to consider:
assuming you're going to be burning the same number of discs, using a 4x drive you're cuttin down the drive usage time by %40.
your drive will live longer...less chance for failures of laser/motor/etc.
