Upgrading to 802.11g on laptop?

Postby Intimidator on Fri Feb 18, 2005 10:17 am

Currently I have a laptop that has built in wireless 802.11b that can be activated by pushing a button. I was interested in upgrading to 802.11g but I am not sure if this can be done? Is this possible? What steps would I need to take.

You'll need to purchase a PCMCIA 802.11g card.

I've upgraded the internal wireless on my notebook. As long as you have an existing internal wireless card (which implies the antenna wires are there as well), and you can access the wireless Mini-PCI card, and have drivers for your OS, you should be able to do it.

One thing you will probably lose is the turning the card on and off with the button. My laptop original had a slide switch that turned the card on and off. When I put in the mini-pci 802.11g card, the switch no longer worked and my card was always on.

Well it depends on what you mean by internal wireless. Some computers come with a mini-pci based wifi adapter. Others have it built into the chipset.

Just need to buy a new mini-pci wifi card to get 802.11g if you have a b adapter in the slot (generally on the bottom of the computer, small slot 2 1.5 inches square with a screw in it)... however if it's built into the chipset, need to get a PCMCIA card or you can get a mini-pci card if you have a slot in your computer.
